Biography

Mary Ann Hooper was born in November 1844.^[1] She was the daughter of Isaac N. Hooper, born in Virginia, and Maria L. Hurt, born in Tennessee.^[2][3]

She married William Wilkes in 1860.^[4] They moved from Robertson County to Graves County between 1860 and 1880.^[5][3]

She passed away on February 1, 1898, and is buried in Dublin in Graves County.^[1]

Ancestry

While the 1850 census records other Mary Hoopers in Tennessee, the record for Isaac and Maria in Sumner County is believed to be the correct one for the following reasons:

1. Sumner County is adjacent to Robertson county (where Mary was present in 1860).
2. Isaac's birth state of Virginia, given in the 1850 census, matches the indication on Mary's 1880 census that her father was born in Virginia.
3. The 1850 census lists Mary with a sister, Malvina. This is an uncommon name, yet Mary had a daughter, Malvina, in 1872.
