Note

Note: The Hoopes' would have to leave England to avoid religous persecution for being Quakers. There is a record of a fine paid by Joshua 'Hoope' of 10 schillings, a fine for he and his wife being present at a Quaker meeting. Joshua was still a member of the Church of England at least until May 1679. Soon after, he became a Quaker as many of his relatives had already done. Joshua carried a certificate from the Meeting of Friends (Quakers) at Rowsby (now spelled Roxby). The certificate was dated May 4, 1683. Roxby is in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Joshua Hoopes sailed to the Delaware River on the 'Providence' (ship) of Scarborough. This was William Penn's last (of 13) ships. He brought with him his 3 children and wife Esibele (Isabel). They landed in Pennsylavania November 10, 1683 Confirmed the Ship's passenger list - Joshua, Wife Isabel and 3 children landing in Chester County in 1683 on the Chester County, Pennsylvania web site. Upon his arrival in Philadelphia from England, he gave a letter to William Penn, which Penn's sister had entrusted Joshua Hoopes to personally deliver. Joshua's ancestral home (farm) near Skelton and Moorsholm is still in existence in 1998. It was built in 1160 and is inhabited by a young couple, Mr. & Mrs. John Powers. It is located on Guisborough Road (though set back from the road, on a hill, and can't be seen) about 2-1/2 miles north of Moorsholm and 5 miles from Skelton. There are two towns named Skelton, so make sure you go toward the one near Moorsholm. In 1684, according to Bucks County Court Records, Joshua was was chosen to be a peace maker for the county. September 1692, he was elected to a committee charged with dividing Bucks County into Townships. In his later years he served as an Elder at the Middletown Meeting in Bucks County. Joshua settled in Makefield, Bucks County, near Langhorne. He and his family became members of the Falls Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Joshua was deeded 100 acres from Wiliiam Penn in 1697. Hoops-9 and Hoopes-474 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates/wife. The spelling Hoopes seems to have been favoured by this branch of the family.
