Biography

John Rankin was born December 21, 1863 i n LeClaire, Scott, IA. He reportedly moved to Oklahoma Territory in 1889. He married Jennie Drew on December 23, 1891. John and Jennie had six children born between March, 1892 and September, 1904. The first five were born in Iowa and the last in Oklahoma Territory, which puts the family in Iowa until about 1902. His wife, Jennie, died in December of 1906. In 1912 he married Maud Crable, who had worked as his housekeeper after Jennie's death. He was her third husband. She had one child, William Starley Jelf, with her second husband. He was raised in their household and registered in the WWII draft as William Starley Hoover. John and Maude had two children. He died in 1941 and she died in 1958.
