Christian Hoover was born February 10, 1776, to George Huber and Rosine or Rosanah Geiser in Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He married Maria Barbara Harmon about 1791 and together they had at least six children: Samuel, Madelin, George, Phillip, Catherine and Christian. He died on February 20, 1850, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, at the age of 76 years. He was buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Sagamore, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.[1][2][3][4]
There was a Christian Hoover living in Plum Creek as well as a Samuel Hoover listed in 1810 and 1820 Federal Census. Since the names are arranged alphabetically in the census record, it can not be determined if they were living next to each other. One can surmise that the Christian Hoover listed in 1810 and 1820 Census in Plum Creek, Armstrong County, was more than likely Samuel's father.
When a Lutheran church was being formed in Plum Creek by a pastor in Kittanning, Christian was elected as an elder and eventually a church building was erected in 1835.
The 1850 Federal Census taken in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, on 6 August 1850, listed Barbara Hoover, age 74, living with Samuel (her oldest son) and Sarah Hoover. .
On November 18, 1809, Christian Hoover sold 69-1/2 acres of a large tract called Hooversbergh to James Richards. A right was reserved to use the sugar trees on the south side of the creek and this land adjoined that of George Hoover. Christian Hoover signed his name in German and his wife Barbara marked her name with an "x". The deed is revorded in Book 1, page 446 and another was shown on page 462 Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, records..
Christian's will was written in German on February 10, 1841, and translated by Keith Barkley of Omaha, Nebraska, in 2007. The will was probated on March 7, 1850, and it is recorded in Book 1, page 706 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania records. (See a copy of Christian's will in the Family Documents of this book).
The widow Barbara Hoover and their sons, Samuel, George, Philip and Christian Jr., renounced their right to administer the estate and letters of administration were issued to Job McCreight. In Will Book 2, page 125 on October 29, 1852, the heirs petitioned that the will be declared null and void and that Christian Hoover's estate be distributed as if he had died intestate. Proceedings appeared in Docket 4, page 269 of the Orphans Court, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.[5]
