Biography

Howard was born 19 February 1866 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, a son of John Hoover.[1][2]

He is identified as the 4-year-old child named Howard who was recorded in the 1870 U.S. Census in the household of John Huver in Rockville (Hummelstown post office), Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of John Huver, age 38, a carpenter; Anna Huver, 28; Grant Huver, 6; Howard Huver, 4; Olive Huver, 8 months (born in October); and George Stephenson, 16, a telegraph operator. All were born in Pennsylvania. [3] He is further identified as the Howard C. Hoover, said to be age 10, who was recorded in the 1880 U.S. Census in the household of 58-year-old widow Catherine Stephenson in the borough of Dauphin, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and identified as Catherine's grandson. Howard was attending school and "works in Brickyard."[4] Others in the household of Catherine Stephenson were daughter Mary J. Stephenson, age 20, a milliner, and granddaughter Olive A. Hoover, 9 and "at school." These identifications are supported by the fact that Howard Hoover had a daughter named Catherine Stephenson Hoover, the presence of a younger sister named Olive in the same household in both census records, and the presence of young George Stephenson in the 1870 census record.

As of 1891, he worked as a bridge builder.[2] In later years he worked as a railroad flagman, brakeman, or switchman.

Howard C. Hoover died in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on 16 April 1954. He was buried in East Harrisburg Cemetery. [1]

Marriage Howard C. Hoover, age 25, of Dauphin County, married Lizzie A. Sultzbach, age 17, of Millersburg, in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on 3 March 1891. It was the first marriage for both. [2]
