Biography

It is said that Eli was a Minister according to his marker which is illegible on the Findagrave memorial. However, family lore recalled that his son, William D. Hoover, left Indiana due to religious conflicts. Forgot to mention found a biography of Eli & Elizabeth (Turnipseed) Hoovers daughter Sarah Ella (Hoover) Masters in a history book of Harvey Co. KS, it states her father as a minister of the United Brethren Church.

Eli was married twice. The first time to Sarah Beaver Eli and S. Beaver are confirmed as parents of William D. in W.D.'s marriage record of 1886. [[1]]

Census

Census reviews seem to be the main route to understanding the two families of Eli. In 1840 Eli Hoover was 20-30 years (1810-1820) in Richland Twp., Miami Co., Indiana with a wife in the same age category and no children. This is the only household that shows only two residents and is likely our subject. He is consistently in this county. [1] He is shown as 1 person in Agriculture.

1850 Eli, 35 and Elizabeth Hoover, 26 and 4 ch by the first wife. [2] as a farmer with Real Estate $2000 and Personal Estate $600. In this household is the new wife and four children by deceased Sarah; Mary Catherine born 1841; William D. born 1842; Silas N. born 1844 and Leanna J. born 1847. . [[3]].

In 1860 Miami Co., IN he was a farmer with $2000 and $600 estates. Three of Sarah's children were with them, Mary C. 20, Silas N.17, Leanna J. 13 having been born in 1847. They also had four new children by Elizabeth: [3]

1. Dr. Eli M b. 1850 d. 1925 Harvey Co. KS

2. John O b. 1856 d, 1861 Miami Co. IN

3. Sarah Ella b. 1858 d. 1928 Harvey Co. KS m. Charles Masters

4. Sherman (c Jan 1860 KS - ) was six months on the 28th of June 1860. It seems that this son Sherman is the same child as Oliver F. shown in 1860 with his parents. The death record for Sherman shows the same birth year, abt 1860 as Oliver which fits for both names. Sherman on the 1900 census in Washington state has Jan,1860 as his birth date. [[4]] Sherman's King Co., Washington State death certificate confirms his parents as Eli & Elizabeth (Turnipseed) Hoover, he died 25 June,1926 aged 66 years 5 months consistent with his 1900 statement of birth. [[5]] An unsupported possibility is that they were twins and one died and the wrong name was recorded.

6. Edmond (1866 - 1933) Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, WA
