Biography

Born Sylvanus Hopkins, son of Judah and Hannah (Mayo) Hopkins was born 14 Feb 1715/6[1][2] in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[3][4]

He married in Harwich, Massachusetts, 30 Nov 1738, Ruth Berry, d/o Judah Berry. They were both admitted to the Harwich Church 5 Aug 1739.[4]

The couple lived in Harwich and Brewster, Massachusetts. They probably lived in Mansfield, Connecticut.

Sylvanus appears on the tax lists of southern Dutchess County, New York from 1760 to 1762.[5] On January 24, 1763, he and his wife mortgaged land in Putnam County, New York.[4] From 1767 to 1770, he was taxed as a farmer at the South Precinct of Dutchess County.[6]

A marriage intention between a Sylvanus Hopkins of Kent, Connecticut and Mrs. Mary Bucknam of Malden, was filed 27 Feb 1772 (found in the Malden Vital Records).[4][7] The only Sylvanus Hopkins this could be for would be this Sylvanus Hopkins, as there was no other Sylvanus Hopkins in Connecticut old enough to marry at that time, let alone residing anywhere near Kent, Connecticut.

In 1776, a Sylvanus Hopkins was taxed at Hardwick, in Worcester County, Massachusetts.[8]

According to an article published in the Chatham Courier on Feb. 26, 1942, Sylvanus had an additional son, Sylvanus Jr., b. 13 April 1761.[9]

Sylvanus was born in 1716. He passed away in 1757.

I just looked at his fathers will. 20 Jan 1747 was the date of his father's will, in which he left stuff to his son Sylvanus

Sylvanus could not have died in 1747 since he was having children as late as 1756. I suggest the date be changed to after 1 Aug 1756. Objections?
