Research Notes
The baptism record (original unseen) appears to be a joint register for a group of Independent non-conformist chapels in the Pontardawe area, of which the Alltwen chapel was built in 1820. A chapel building exists in Alltwen on Alltwen Hill at OS grid reference SN727033, apparently a later rebuild. A half-mile footpath leads down from Cilhendre Farm.
References to Llangiwg and Cilybebyll in the chapel description would appear to be simply the established church parishes in which these three chapels are located. These are not to be confused with the daughter chapel of similar name which was later constructed at Ystalyfera.
On 2 Aug 1870, Lewis and Elizabeth boarded the shi p "City of Paris" in Liverpool, bound for America. Arriving on 29 Aug, the ship's manifest indicates they traveled steerage and the family included: Lewis, 42, a clerk; Elizabeth, 40, his wife; Thomas, 19 , a Joiner; Anna, 17, a spinster; John, 11; Joan, 9; Elizabeth, 2; an d Mary, 4 months.
Hopkin's name is missing. What a brave step this was to take in mid- life a 27 day voyage to a new land with 6 children ranging in age from 4 months to 19 years.
Soon after they arrived, the 1870 U.S. census was taken, indicating they were living in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in a house valued at ,000 and personal property totaling 0 . Lewis was a laborer, as were Hopkin, Thomas and Anna. Baby Jane w as 10/12 years old. 1880 finds them still in the same township, and Lewis once more is a mason, Elizabeth still keeping house, and John is an "Apprentice Machine". Maybe the census taker couldn't spell "Machinist."[3]
