Biography

William was born in England. He arrived in New England by 1656 because that is when his first child is born in the colonies. He was the father of at least eleven children. Note: his wife's name is not given in any of the extant birth records. It is unclear whether these are all the children of one wife or not.

Research Notes

On the plus side, there are now birth records for all eleven children (all born/christened in Roxbury) listed above. There is also a valid death record for William in Roxbury in 1688. The rest is surrounded by question marks.

  • Estimated Date: the birth date on this profile was originally 1601-1605. It doesn't make sense that he came to the colonies when he was over 50 and fathered 11 children. It seems more likely that a generation was skipped or that it is a completely different Hopkins line.
  • Also, there were two William Hopkins. One was the son of William Hopkins (Sr) and the other was the son of Stephen Hopkins.
  • Someone needs to go in and physically look at this in a FamilySearch reading room. The link gives little information. It argues that he settled in the colonies between 1654 and 1663, but gives no proof on the Ancestry "record."

Possible marriage records:
  • William Hopkins married Elizabeth Peade on 22 Oct 1627 at the church of St. Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Middlesex, England.

  • William Hopkins married Hannah Susannah Andrews (1639–1679) on 30 May 1659 Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. Which William? Unknown. Note: found on FamilySearch; no source given.

Cooke-7654 13:38, 16 February 2023 (UTC) There's a comment on Ruth Wilkinson's page that explains the removal of her as William's mother. If someone finds any contemporary evidence of William's ancestry, we'll reevaluate.

This book reprints two articles from The American Genealogist in it's appendices: one by Johnson that disassociates Mayflower Stephen Hopkins from any Dudley connections; another one by Ernest Martin Christensen who went through 137 sources to come up with Stephens parentage and brother. Besides this book is an interesting read!

Thanks for everyone's comments. I adopted this profile a while back and never got back to tidy it up. Thanks for the reminders. :)

I have cleaned up the profile, eliminating or moving the less reliable sources to either "Research Notes" or "See also," and updating the likely DOB.

It is possible but highly unlikely that he was born in 1601, came to the colonies in his mid-50s, got married and had eleven children over almost twenty years. It is far more likely that he was born about 1625, which would make him about 30 at the time of the birth of his first son and in his 60s at the time of death. This is more logical, but would, however, eliminate the connection to Ruth Wilkerson.

Before I remove Ruth as his mother, does anyone have any other sources or suggestions?

Appears to be same as familysearch ID G9DY-BQ3 "Williams Hopkins Sr." - son of Stephen Hopkins (ID GZTW-TBW) and Ruth Wilkerson.

Thank you. I am out of town, but I will look into it when I get home.

Same death date as his supposed son. Thus, this entry is questionable. Also, see other comments below.

This man may not have existed. There is no record of William Hopkins's (1633) parents. Going to list them as uncertain until evidence shows up.

If Wm arrived in Mass between 1654 and 1663, how could they have married in 1625? Must be incorrect dates or incorrect people.
I am removing William from Mayflower Stephens sons. It is possible he was a brother but not a son. See reference that I added by Caleb Hopkins. You can also check Pilgrim Hopkins Heritage Association on line. www.pilgrimhopkins.com.
