Biography

Stephen Bennett Hopkins was born on Friday, August 6, 1847, in Cortland, Cortland County, New York. His parents were Josiah Cyrus (1799 - Friday, March 21, 1879) and Lavina Leach Hopkins (Friday, May 11, 1910 - Friday, January 15, 1892). His father's occupation was a cooper. Coopers were tradesmen who made casks, buckets, barrels, and containers for flour, gunpowder, tobacco, and all kinds of liquids.

Stephen's father was married twice. His first marriage was to Orilla Taylor (1795-1844). They married in 1820 and had four children. Stephen and Lavina married in 1844 in Marathon, Cortland County, New York and had five children, Stephen being their middle child.

Stephen and Caroline Cordelia Smith (Wednesday, December 24, 1856 - Thursday, June 30, 1921) were married on Saturday, August 23, 1879, in Lapeer Township, Cortland County, New York. Stephen was 32 and Caroline was 22. They were married for forty-six years and raised five sons and one daughter. A farmer, Stephen relocated from New York state to Pennsylvania in 1894 at the age of forty-six..

Oscar Donald Hopkins (Tuesday, March 4, 1890 – Tuesday, May 20, 1947)

Arthur Bennett Hopkins (Friday, March 18, 1892 – Friday, March 30, 1979)

Stephen was a Constable and Truant Officer for Shippen Township. The Cameron County Museum is in Sterling Run, and they have a picture of Stephen Hopkins, with his handlebar mustache, black suit and vest in their display, looking very much like Wyatt Earp. They also have his handcuffs and badge in a display case in the back room .The Museum was the old School House. It was one of the first pre-made buildings of its time and was sold by Sears Co. This is located down in the country where the elk run wild and come right up to the cars.

Stephen Bennett Hopkins, age 78, passed away on Sunday, March 21, 1926, at Sterling Run, Eldred Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania and is buried in an unmarked grave at Morrison Cemetery, Morrison, Hamilton Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania (now defunct)
