Biography

Samuel Hopkins was born on 16 MAY 1745 in Anne Arundel County, the son of Philip Hopkins and his wife Elizabeth Hall.

In 1761 Samuel Hopkins request a certificate from the Clifts/West River Quakers to transfer to the Deer Creek Meeting. Samuel signed a petition to prevent the removal of court house in Joppa to Baltimore in 1768.

Marriage

The marriage of Samuel Hopkins is recorded in the meeting minutes of the Deer Creek Quaker Church. This church is located today in Darlington, Maryland. According to the church's Facebook page, the original meeting house was built in 1737 and replaced with a larger building in 1784. The marriage record for Samuel states: Samuel Hopkins, son of Phillip Hopkins, deceased, of Anne Arundel County, and his wife Elizabeth, m. Mary Gover, dau. of Ephraim Gover of Baltimore County, and his wife Elizabeth, on 8th day of 6th month, 1769 at Deer Creek. Since the Quakers began counting the months in March, this would place the marriage month as August.[1]

No birth record has been found for the children of Samuel & Mary Hopkins. However, the family does appear in a census taken in Harford County in 1776. According to this census, the family was living in the Deer Creek Lower Hundred. Samuel and Mary were both listed as age 30. The children listed were:

Elizabeth age 6 b. abt. 1770
Ephraim Gover age 5 b. abt. 1771
Phillip age 3 b. abt. 1773
Samuel age 1 b. abt. 1775.[2]

Death

Four men with the Hopkins surname appear on the 1790 Federal Census for Harford County. Their names were Charles, Garratt, Joseph & Samuel. No death records have been found for Samuel Hopkins. He possibly moved to the Ohio country with one of his sons.
