Reuben was a soldier in the Confederate Army, in the Civil War. He joined Captain White G. Ryons Company I Sixtieth Regiment of of Virginia Infantry in August 1861 at the age of 37 years with a family of a wife and seven children. He volunteered at Princeton Mercer County, Virginia now West Virginia. He served in the Confederate Army from August 1861 until the Christmas Holidays, December 1864. At that time he was given a furlough to visit his home and family including his eighth child, a young son. John C. Brackenridge, his Colonel, and Buehring H. Jones told him he need not report to his command unless he was called back to the service.
He rests by the side of his wife in the Rocky Mount Cemetery near his home on the Shockley's Hill Road near Pipestem Church of which Church he was a faithful member for fifty-nine years and the Clerk for fifty-four years.
