The 38th Infantry was called the Pittsylvania Regiment because 7 of 10 companies were recruited from Pittsylvania County. For the 38th, John was in Company K, also known as the Cascade Rifles. The center for recruitment of Company K was in the Cascade area of Pittsylvania County. Henry County, John's origin, borders Cascade, Pittsylvania, and some men from Henry would join Company K.
