Biography

"George was either conscripted or joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. It has been said he joined the Union Army at 14 years of age although he was 17 years and about 3 months. He enlisted December 1, 1861at Elk Fork, KY; with Co. G. 20th Tennessee Inf. CSA. He resided in Perry County, Tennessee. The government provided the headstone which marks his grave. He ran a saloon and a saw mill. His girls cut saw mill timber just like men. In the 1920 Izard Co., Ar., Census he is listed as a farmer. He was 84 years of age when he died. Lum Byler wrote in 25 Jan 1968 that George died in 1932. Mary Elnora Gifford said he ran a soloon and later bought the lumber mill. She said his name was John George Washington Horner. According to the Archie papers his name is J.G.W. Horner. according to the Lee Horner Byler letter of 2/12/1968 his name is George John W. Horner. In Lum's 25 Jan 1968 letter his name is John W. Horner as well as in the 1920 Census." From Original Profile manager.
