Biography

CENSUS INFORMATION: In the 1920 US Census, he is listed as William Horner, aged 4 years and 8 months and born in Pennsylvania. He is living with his grandparents, Edmund and Paulina Kitzing, in Precinct 1 of Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. (Supervisors District 24, Enumeration District 249, Sheet 25A). In the 1940 US Census, he is listed as William S Horner, an accounts clerk in a gas company, aged 24 and born in Pennsylvania. He is married but living by himself in Clarksberg, Harrison county, West Virginia;in 1935 he was living in Edgewood, Allegheny, PA. (Supervisors District 3, Enumeration District 17-24, Sheet 61A).

GENERAL NOTES: Homer or Horner. His father was William Sherman Horner. His mother was: Helena Gertrude Kitzing b. Aug/16/1894 d. June/26/1977. His mother's parents were: Edmund Johan Kitzing born in Sternberg, Potsdam, Prussia and Matilta Paulina Theresa Stevens, born Dec 7 1867 Oberhausen, ( I can't read this name, my best guess is 'Rheiraproinz') Prussia. Just to give you more information on my great grandfather was also William Sherman Horner born in 1862 and his wife was Odessa L. Horner born in 1864. So far I have not been able to go back further. My mother's name was Ethel Argall Horner and her father was Thomas Argall. I do not have the information on the Argall's beyond that. His father was of the same name and went by "Sherman". He died when Bill was not yet 3 years old. Therefore, we know very little about him. We have a very few photos.

MARRIAGE: The Pittsburg Press dated June 29th 1938:

The betrothal of Miss Ethel Jane Argall, daughter of Thomas Argall of Riverview Ave., Swissvale, and William S Horner, son of Mrs Sherman Horner and the late Mr Hormer of Edgewood, was made known at a bridge tea in the garden of the home of Mrs George M Foliart, of Perrymont Rd., Perryville, an aunt of the bride-elect. Miss Argall has selected August 22nd for her wedding, which will take place in Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church. Rev. W. S. Thomas will read the service.

OBITUARY: William S Horner, 53, of 180 Laycock Avenue, East Rochester, died Monday Nov. 18, 1968 in Rochester Hospital. He was employed as a clerk by Penn-Central Railroad Co., Conway, and was a member of Brotherhood of Steamship and Railroad Clerks. Surviving are his wife, Ethel A Argall Horner, a son Thomas Monaca; a daughter Mrs Sandra Scullin, Carrick, Pa; three grandchildren, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Dale, Warrendale, Pa. Friends are being received frpm 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m..in the W Dale Coleman Funeral Home, Rochester, where a service will be conducted Thursday at 1.30 p.m. by Reverend Wallace Huber. Interment will be inm Allegheny Memorial Cemetery.

BURIAL: Both are buried in the Allegheny Cemetery Allison Park, McCandless Twp. PA.
