Biography

He held sheep grazing lands at Leigh-on-Mendip, living just a short stroll from the North door of St Giles chuch. Robert (alias Richard) Horner & Sir Nicholas Latimer also held lands in Leigh rented to J. Staunton of Downhead and took him to court for non-payment of rents. Osbert, Reeve of Leigh, gave witness in 1428. It seems Robert was a cautious man and may have used the name Richard for some legal issues.

Sources

  • From 'The history of Mells' by the reverend F W Cleverdon p.25

"Robert Horner the elder, late of Mellys (Mells), but now of Dulting (Doulting), charged with stealing oxen, sheep and other animals from divers persons. His purgation was to be held in the new chapel of the cloister of Wells cathedral on 1st October 1449." (My copy of this book was previously owned and inscribed by Helen Asquith, daughter of Katharine Frances Asquith née Horner, the last Horner of Mells 1885-1976.)
