Biography

Jesse Horton was born about 1787, in Chatham county, North Carolina. Jesse was the son of Abraham Horton and Adythia Clark.


Jesse made his last will and testament on the 15th of April, 1839, in DeKalb county, Alabama. Jesse's will reads as follows: "In the name of God Amen I Jesse Horton do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following first I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping and believing in a remission of my sins by the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, and my body I commit to the earth to be buried at the direction of my Executors herein after named, and my wordly good I give and devise as follows first I desire that all the debts and me be collected and be applied to the payment of my debts after my death. Secondly after the payment of my debts and funeral expenses which I wish not to be in ? I give to my wife Decey Horton all the rest of my property that reman after my just debts and so on as above described be settled so long as she live or remains single, but at her death or marriage I wish all my property equally divided among my children and to be enjoyed by them forever and lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend Archibald Horton and Andrew C. Horton Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me here after made in ? whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal this the 15th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine (signed) Jesse his X mark Horton Signed sealed published and declared and for the last will and testament of the above named Jesse Horton in presence of us Jacob W. Brook, James Naler Ayres Steward The State of Alabama DeKalb County} I Polydon Naylor Judge of the county court of said county certify that the within will was presented for probate & sworn to by Jacob W. Brook and James Nalor two of the subscribing, witnesses to the same this 20th day of May AD 1839 in open court as the law directs [signed] P. Naylor"[1]
