Death

Seth Haskins was murdered on September 4, 1819, in Saratoga County, New York.

From The Saratoga News - Author David Fiske Benjamin Bennett killed Seth Haskins in Corinth on Sept. 4, 1819. Varying accounts of the murder can be found on the Internet, but the account given in "The Bench and Bar of Saratoga County" says that Bennett, known for his drinking, had seen Haskins leaving Bennett's home, having visited his wife while he was absent. Haskins was attacked with a whip, and after falling to the ground, was dealt a blow from a large stone. He succumbed to his injuries 11 days later.

Bennett was convicted of murder rather than manslaughter since evidence was presented of his malice toward the victim. While in custody awaiting his execution, his behavior became erratic, with him drawing sketches of both Jesus and Satan on the walls of his cell, and also being abusive toward friends who visited him.

Local clergymen tried to convince him to repent, but he spat in their faces, and expressed his desire to go to eternity "with all his sins and imperfections on his head."

On July 21, 1820, at noon, he was walked the mile from the jail to the hanging ground. On the scaffold, the Saratoga Sentinel reported that he displayed a "stupid indifference." Several pastors made remarks and offered prayers, but the accused said little, other than that he believed the sentence to be unjust.

At about 2 p.m., the door was sprung, and poor Bennett suffered a difficult death, as "his struggles were severe and lasted about ten minutes." After about a half-hour, his body was taken down and turned over to friends for burial.

It was estimated that as many as 30,000 observed the execution, and their varying levels of dress indicated the appeal of the event to all classes. The crowd experienced "emotions of no ordinary nature."
