"MR. ROBERT HOSKINS." Daily Examiner (Grafton, NSW: 1915 - 1954) 28 Aug 1926

MR. ROBERT HOSKINS.
Another old pioneer of the district passed away at the Grafton Hospital on the 17th inst., in the person of Mr. Robert Hoskins.
Mr. Hoskins was born in Lismore 76 years ago and at quite a young age took to the cedar cutting industry. Fifty years ago he came to the Clarence to the big cedar scrubs, where he became very popular among the pit-sawyers of the day. One great gift of his was the violin and many a wedding he played for in the old days. He was connected with the timber industry until a couple of years ago, when he decided to have a well-earned rest. He gained the reputation of being the champion, saw sharpener of the rivers.
His wife predeceased him some 19 years ago. They left a big, family behind to mourn their loss. Those living are Messrs. Herbert (South Grafton); Arthur and Charles (Sydney), Robert and William (Melbourne), Clarrie (Ballina), Mrs. J. Schafer (Grafton), Mrs. W. Cottingham (Casino) and Mrs. C. Dean (Tamworth). Three daughters predeceased him, viz., Emma, Zillah and Mary. Three sisters of deceased are living, namely, Mrs. John Nicholson (Glenreagh), Mrs. James Taylor (Sydney), Mrs. A . Milligan (Brisbane). There are also 28 grand children and four great-grandchildren.
The remains were buried in the English portion of the Grafton cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, many relatives being present, also many of his old friends of the earlier days. The Rev. Canon Needham officiated at the grave-side.
FUNERAL NOTICE. The friends of the late Robert Hoskins are respectfully invited to attend his funeral to move, from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J. Schafer, jun., 149 Bacon street, THIS DAY, at 3.30 o 'clock. ANDREW ENGLERT, Funeral Director.

Robert Henry Hoskins also married Mary Hinchey on 23 Dec 1913 at Bellingen, NSW. The marrriage certificate says that they were 55 and 52 (although I think Robert was actually 62!). Mary was born in Limerick. Ireland in 1861 and her previous name was Mayland or Maylam (it is difficult to read). I don't know why she doesn't get a mention in Roberts obituary - unless she had died before he did, but I can't find any death record for her. The marriage certificate is NSW Reg. No. 16000/1913. She is also mentioned on Roberts death certificate as his 2nd wife. His death cert. is NSW Reg. No. 13592/1926 and dated 18 Aug 1926. Cheers Jennifer Cheers Jennifer
Also I am looking to assess whether this Robert Hoskins was the husband of Amelia Wright Wright-54767 who passed away after being married for only a couple of years. NSW BDM Marriage 3359/1872.
I think there is enough to link the two profiles as the first marriage unless there is an objection.
Regards
I am fairly sure that Amelia Wright was Robert Henry Hoskins first wife. I have a Ref No. 1872/3359 for the marriage. Married in St. Andrews Church of England church Lismore 2 Sep 1872. Witnesses William John Wood and Emma Wright (Amelia's sister). Both were living at an aboriginal settlement called Numulgi, just north of Lismore. Neither are indigenous. I was a bit sceptical as Robert was described as a farmer when he usually worked around the cedar industry or as a saw sharpener. I have come across a record that indicates that he had a 40 acre land selection at Lismore that he sold on 14 Mar 1872 - just a few months before he married Amelia. So, he probably was a farmer for awhile. It was good to see the article on his domestic dispute with Mrs Hoskins nee Mary Hinchey as that is the only reference I have seen to Mary apart from Robert's marriage certificate to Mary Hinchey. I still haven't tracked her down - but she is not the Mary Hinchey (nee Nilan) buried with Denis Hinchey at Maclean.
