During the Civil War, he served with Company D of the 1st Ohio Calvary. He enlisted in August 1861 in Columbus, Ohio. After 3 years, he reenlisted and received a 30 day furlough. He was mustered out in September 1865 in Hilton Head, South Carolina.[3][4][5][6]
During his furlough in late 1864, he married(1) Emily Dixon in Licking Co., Ohio. (Source needed - may not be possible given Licking County Courthouse fire).

He married(2) Mary J. Campbell 21 October 1873 in McLean Co., Illinois.[8]
