Biography

Jonathan HOUGH was bp in June 1729[1] the child of Zephaniah Hough and Catharine Weston.

On 17 Feb 1757 at Kent, Connecticut Jonathan married Desire ROWLEY[2] (2 Dec 1731 CT - ), dau of Jonathan ROWLEY and possibly his second wife, Abigail (GREEN) ROWLEY.

Jonathan and Desire and their known children and their spouses stayed together on a migration from far western Massachusetts to Clinton, then Montgomery, then Otsego, and finally Herkimer Counties in New York over a course of almost 50 years. They went from Sharon, Conn., where the first two children were born to Lenox, MA, in 1761 or 1762. They moved west across the border onto New York before the Revolution. Jonathan’s oldest son Zephaniah submitted an affidavit on behalf of Ebenezar Cady’s widow in her Revolutionary War pension application saying that he had marched with Capt. Cady of New Concord (now Chatham), Columbia County, in June 1777. Jonathan was listed in Capt. Cady's beat in New Concord in 1779 and Jonathan and Desire were listed as members of the Congregational Church of Christ in New Concord, May 24, 1781.

Jonathan’s son Zephaniah was also a Revolutionary War patriot. A fairly detailed history of the migration of this family from Columbia County to Herkimer County is given in the affidavit of Sabra Hough, the wife of this Zephaniah, in her Revolutionary War widow’s pension application of 1845. She says she was born April 12, 1763, and lived with her parents in the town of Chatham (then New Concord) in Columbia County, which adjoins the state of Massachusetts, until her marriage with Zephaniah Hough. Their marriage occurred in the late fall or early winter of 1785 in the home of a Presbyterian minister in the adjoining town of New Canaan (now just Canaan), N.Y. They remained in Chatham until May of 1786, and moved then to “Warren's Bush in Schoharie County.”

Known children of Jonathan and Desire are as follows:

  1. Thankful Hough (Huff) was born 13 Dec 1757, in Sharon TWP, Litchfield, Connecticut[3] She married ELISHA ALDERMAN about 1776, probably in New York.
  2. Zephaniah Hough 2 was born 28 Sep 1760 in Sharon TWP, Litchfield, Connecticut[4], and died June 05, 1840 in Schuyler, Herkimer, N.Y. He married SABRA SMITH about November 1785 in Canaan, Columbia, N.Y. She was born April 12, 1763 in Chatham, Columbia, N.Y., and died after 1850 in Schuyler, Herkimer, N.Y.
  3. Benjamin Hough was born January 04, 1763 in Lenox, Berkshire, Mass., and died November 12, 1836 in Cleveland, Ohio. He married MERCY JERVIS. She was born December 25, 1762, and died October 03, 1857.
  4. Jonathan Hough was born after 1763
  5. Anna (Cathy) Hough was born after 1763. She married MILO BOSTWICK about 1780. He died before 1800.
  6. Eunice Desire Hough was born about 1768. She married EBENEZER BACON about 1789. She died in Unadilla, Otsego, N.Y., April 30, 1825.

Jonathan died in December 1804 in Schuyler, Herkimer, New York. (documented in Elida Hough manuscript).

Notes:

  • Disputed birth date: "The birth year for the Jonathan Hough who married Desire Rowley in 1757 is invariably given as 1720 in posted internet and LDS genealogies. The origin of this date is undoubtedly the Elida Hough manuscript, which does say 1720. It was probably an estimate by a descendant who corresponded with Elida or his father in the late 1800s. Elida entered all he knew about this family in the rear of his manuscript, which was devoted to individuals and families that neither he nor his father could connect to William and Sarah Calkins Hough. Now that a record of the baptism of this Jonathan in 1729 has been found, he seems the only logical candidate for the husband of Desire Rowley, who was born in 1731. A recent test of the Y-DNA of a descendant of this Jonathan matches almost exactly the Y-DNA of the known descendants of his father Zephaniah and confirms the father-son relationship. By extension, it further confirms the descent of this line from William and Sarah Calkins Hough through a DNA match with a known descendant (the author of this article) of another son, Samuel."
  • Bio is from combined research of Max Huff, Billy Huff and William W. Hough based on earlier research by Elida Hough
  • Jonathan ROWLEY's will of 21 Dec 1769 did not mention his dau Desire HOUGH. By that time she and Jonathan HOUGH had moved to Chatham, Columbia Co, NY. (What is known of Jonathan was recorded by E. C. Hough from letters he received from descendants. He was unable to connect Jonathan to William HOUGH of CT, but he was sure he belonged in that family.)
  • 1764 Jonathan Hough sold 75 acres of land to Ambrose Hunt at Lennox, MA
  • 1790[5]: Mohawk, Montgomery, New York, Jonathan Hough - 2M>16, adjacent to Zephaniah Hough
  • 1800[6]: Otsego, Otsego, New York. Jona Hough. 1M - Under 10, 1M - 26 thru 44, 1F - 16 thru 25. Jonathan and Zephaniah Hough are both listed and separated by a female Caty Bostwick. This Jonathan is the son, brother of Zephaniah, as he is in the 26-45 age group and the father would be age 71. In Zephaniah’s household are 2 adult males, 1 in the 26-45 age group and one in the 45 and over group. Same for adult females. The older couple is Jonathan and Desire and the younger couple Zephaniah and Sabra.

Hough-3811 and Hough-396 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, I created a new profile for Jonathan Hough by mistake ... for some strange reason the duplicate didn't show up. Could you please merge the duplicate into the main profile? Thank you! David Peirce

Hough-795 and Hough-396 appear to represent the same person because: Recently, the baptism date for Jonathan Hough was found by my fellow Hough researcher - William (Bill) Hough. Prior to this the 1720 date was assumed to be correct. Regards, Bill Huff (Max Huff also concurs)

Hough-795 and Hough-396 are not ready to be merged because: With birth dates as disparate as these they could possibly be two different people who have been perceived as the same
