David Howe was born 2 Nov 1674, in Sudbury, Massachusetts, the son of Samuel Howe and Martha Bent.[1] He married Hepzibah Death 25 Dec 1700, the daughter of John and Mary (Peabody) Death, born in Framingham 5 Jun 1680.[2]
David's father, Samuel, gave to him 130 acres of "New Grant Land" on 04 Jun 1702. Here he built the now famous tavern in Sudbury, first known as the "Howe Tavern" and afterwards, from it's sign-board, as the "Red Horse Tavern". Some accounts have said that it was built over two centuries ago, but other and more accurate accounts state that it was built by David about 1701 or 1702. Sources are Hudson's Sudbury, page 591 and Temple's Framingham, Page 599. At any rate, it was kept by David Howe and his descendants for about 160 years. In an article in the Ladie's Home Journal for Sep 1899, it is stated that after the death of Squire Lyman Howe, great grandson of David, "the property then went by inheritance to a female relative, who sold the property in 1897 to Mr. Edward R. Lemon, when the first deed of the estate in over 200 years was drawn and passed. The only previous deed, was the Indian deed signed in 1684. Mr. Lemon restored the dwelling with careful regard for historic detail. It has been immortalized by Longfellow in the book "Tales of the Wayside Inn" and has long been a favorite subject in Drake's "Our Colonial Homes", pages 159-168. The place was known as the "Wayside Inn" for many years and has had visitors from all over the country. It was also owned by Henry Ford of Detroit who laid out a great amount of money in restoration of it. Among the ancient heirlooms kept there was an old sword, mentioned in the poem "Wayside Inn", worn by Colonel Ezekial Howe (son of David) in the battle of Concord.[3]
David How married Ephzibah Death on 25 Dec 1701 Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts and they had the following known children:
Death, 1759 at Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts. David Howe, yeoman, Last Will and Testament dated 1 October 1759, Massachusetts Bay, New England, township Sudbury. Son Ezekiel Howe named Executor. Of historical note
The Wayside Inn today is operated as a restaurant and a B&B, and it is supported as a Massachusetts Historic Landmark by a non-profit Board of Directors first set up by the Henry Ford family in 1944 and then transitioned in 1957 to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. See the Wayside Inn web site for more information.
