Note

Note: Dora's childhood was remembered for the fact that she nearly died,
from the effects of small-pox vaccination. After that her father
would not allow any of his other children to risk vaccination and
had to go to court for each one to be exempted. In those days
vaccination was not only rather crude medicine but was enforced by
law.
Dora survived to go to Blackheath High School and gain the education
that her mother had so wished for herself as a girl. Dora was an
energetic young person who went in for dancing classes and exercises
with dumbells. She worked hard for the Burnt Ash Band of Hope, and
was always hopeful that her brothers would sign the pledge. There
was a trend towards tee-totalism among them but she never entirely
convinced them.
She was a pillar of strength in the home, and took on the rôle of
second mother, just as Arthur had become surrogate father. Like
him, she didn't marry until she was in her thirties. She married a
Welshman, Howard Jenkins and had one son, Ivor in 1910. Most of her
married life was spent in Snaresbrook, and it was there that she
used to look after her younger brother, Foster Garfield after he had
become senile, relieving her niece Mira for weeks at a time. She
was over eighty herself by then, but as cheerful and vigourous as
ever.
Rheumatism and old age finally caught up with her, and she lost her
sight but also the rheumatism. Being of a philosophical nature, she
took all this in good part, as her particular dispensation from the
Deity. As one of the family remarked, "Hers was no narrow piety".
She spent some happy years in Boscombe, near her son and daughter-
in-law, Ivor and Gwen. {Source 18}.
