John was a "fine specimen of manhood, tall, well-built, splendid in appearance..." and "was entirely satisfied with the status quo and highly displeased with any relative of his who sought to disturb it." John learned the printing business from his father and worked with him, succeeding him in 1818 as King’s Printer and Deputy Postmaster General and as Agent Manager & Director of His Majesty’s Packet Boats in Halifax. "He was for years King's Printer and Postmaster General in succession to his father, and it was in his office that Joseph Howe learned the 'art preservative'." [1] He continued in those offices until he died 18 Jan 1843.

John was Chairman of the Committee of St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church from 10 June 1825. - Ebenezer Renny in "Statement ..."

" On August 12th, 1815, the property of Belmont was conveyed to John Howe, jr., by Edward B. Brenton and his wife Catherine for £1,800 sterling, ..." "The Howes loved the shores of the Northwest Arm and made their homes upon its wooded slopes. John Howe, jr., the half brother of Joseph, we have seen lived at Belmont for many years. John Howe, sr., owned part of the Emscote land and the Uniacke lot, and conveyed this property to John Howe, jr., on June 25th, 1823, for £325, the deed being witnessed by Joseph Doby and R.J. Morse, and it refers to various buildings on the property. The deed was recorded the following year. The property was conveyed by John Howe, jr., to Robert Lawson, Feb. 24th, 1836 for £500. This comprised lots number 6 and 7, letter D, in the south division of farm lots on the peninsula, about 4 1/4 acres." [2]

In 1838, John Howe, P M General, was residing in Halifax with a family consisting of 2 females under fourteen years of age, 5 males above fourteen years of age and not heads of families and 5 females above fourteen years of age, total 13 including himself. [3]

John died 18 Jan 1843 in Halifax. The 28 Jan 1843 edition of the New Brunswick Courier reported: "d. Halifax, N.S., Wednesday morn., 18th inst., John Howe, Esq., Queens Printer and Deputy Post Master General, age 59"[4]
