Joseph Howe was born 7 July 1834 in Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia. By 1866, he was a merchant seaman serving in the Indian Ocean. [1]

Joseph died in Australia. (The date is given in "The family of John Howe ..." as 24 August 1888 in Cookstown. That date matches the Australia Death Index which names his mother as Harriet Austin. Is this really the right death registration? Or did the person registering his death not know?) [2]
