The funeral of the late Mr. J. Howe took place yesterday, and was largely attended. Mr Howe was one of the oldest settlers here. He came out in the ship "CLIFTON" and brought up a large family of sons and daughter, all of whom married and settled well. He was always a steady, honest and good colonist and was generally respected. He leaves 86 grandchildren. [1]
The Howes were assisted immigrants to the New Zealand Company settlement at Wellington. They arrived in New Zealand at Port Nicholson on 17 February 1842 on the ship Clifton. Clifton, of 820 tons, sailed from Isle of Wight on 3rd October 1941, (2nd October Gravesend) with some 283 souls, the emigrants having embarked on 28th September 1841 at Blackwell. The Howes were accompanied by their close relatives the Maces, Amos Mace being Elizabeth's brother and Catherine Mace the sister of John.
