Biography

Abraham Howe immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Born in England about 1630 and came to Roxbury, Massachusetts with his father about 1635. He married Alice Mattocks, daughter of James and Mary Mattocks of Boston as her third husband, but it is clear that his listed children were born to an unknown first wife. They lived in Roxbury, Mass., where he died 21 Nov. 1683. In the settlement of his estate no other children were mentioned than those named here.

He was a Puritan of the straightest sect, as he sided with Gov. Endicott and others in the crusade inaugurated during the Commonwealth period against the fashion of men wearing long hair, as appears from his signature to a petition on that subject sent to the General Court by divers of the inhabitants of Roxbury. The petition which is a curious illustration of the times, is given in 35 N. E. H. & Gen. Reg. p. 121-3, together with a facsimile of his signature.[1]
