Biography

Sydenham Howe, the child of Sydenham Howe and Fanny McNab. was born 20 Mar 1872 in Halifax. He was also known as Sydenham James Howe. Sydenham married 9 Jun 1897 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Georgiana Mitchell, b. 1873, daughter of William Mitchell and Sarah McKenzie. From about 1902 until mid-1913, S. J. Howe was the manager/agent in Kingston, Jamaica for the Sun Life of Canada insurance company. He travelled to Boston in 1902, 1905 and 1910 and to New York in 1908. He relocated to Singapore, Straits Settlements, to become the Asia-Pacific manager for Sun Life of Canada, a position that he held from November 1913 until about 1920, when he began his own (private) business to sell insurance. He travelled to Japan in 1917, likely part of a longer journey. In 1926, he travelled from Boston and Halifax to Liverpool. He retired in early 1928, and returned from Singapore to Jamaica, where he purchased a large property near present-day Spur Tree, in the parish of Manchester. He passed away in Kingston, Jamaica on May 26th, 1951.
