Biography

Caleb Howe was born in Vernon, Vermont about 1753. He was the son of Caleb Howe and Jemima Sawtelle, widow of William Phipps. Caleb was captured by Indians with his mother and siblings about 1755 and taken to Canada. They were redeemed and brought back home before 1760 by a Colonel Schuyler.[1][2]

Caleb served in the Queens Rangers and can be found in the muster rolls as an Ensign from the period ending 29 Jan 1779 to 24 Aug 1780[3]. On 29 Aug 1780 he was promoted to Lieutenant in the Queens Rangers[4]. He was taken as a prisoner of war on 19 Oct 1781[5] when the British Army surrendered to the American Continental Army at Yorktown. Caleb was found once again in the muster rolls of the Queens Rangers from the period ending 23 Apr 1782 until 24 Aug 1782[6] and again in the muster roll as a Lieutenant in the Queens Rangers for the period ending 24 Apr 1783 when he was serving in Captain James Murray's company[7].

Caleb married Esther Fairweather at Parr Town (renamed Saint John), New Brunswick in Jan 1784.[8][9]

“Jedediah Fairweather and Samuel Fairweather at present of the Parish of ____ in the County of Kings and Province of New Brunswick - make oath - that they were present at the marriage of Caleb Howe, - who was a Lieutenant (during the American Rebellion) in His Majestys Service in the Provincial Regiment called the Queens Rangers, and who at the close of the Rebellion - placed on the Half Pay of said Regiment, - with Esther Fairweather - Daughter of Jedediah, and that the Marriage was performed & solemnized - between the said Caleb Howe and the said Esther Howe in the then town of Parr, now the City of St John, in the Month of January 1784 by the Reverend John Beardsley a Missionary of the Church of England.“

A Loyalist, in 1785 he was granted land at Parr Town, Lot 195 : Caleb Howe and 1145 others, re-registered Nova Scotia Grant of 1784/08/14.[10]

Caleb Howe petitioned for land with four others at Westmorland, New Brunswick in 1791.[11]
