Biography

Isaac Bridgman Howe was bon in Norwich, Vermont 27 June 1827. He married 20 Sep 1859 in Vermont Hannah Rebecca Gould.[1] They had seven children.

He was by profession a civil engineer. They lived in Northfield, Vt., several yean ; during that time he was representative to the State Legislature three terms, and was chairman of the Republican County Committee. He went to Iowa in the Spring of 1861. Just prior to leaving Northfield he helped to raise and fit out the first regiment of volunteers to go to Washington from Vermont He located in Clinton, Iowa, and for nine years he was Superintendent of the Chi- cago and Northwestern Railway across the State of Iowa. Later he was one of. the directors of the Iowa Midland Railway, and a director of the First National Bank of Clinton, Iowa, and also a director of the "Clinton Savings Bank" in that city. He bad considerable taste for literature, wrote many short stories in both poetry and prose. One article called "Howe's Railway Rhymes" was published in the Chicago Evening Journal, and gave him some prominence as a writer, as it was used in a lawsuit against the railway, as evidence in behalf of the company. Later in life they returned east, and located in Danvers, Mass. He died there 23 April 1880. [2]

Research Notes

The Howe Genealogies list their marriage date as 22 Sept 1859. The Vermont Vital Records list 20 Sept 1859 as the marriage date for both of them (separate record cards).
