Pvt Rufus Herrick Howe was born 7 Jan 1823, in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. His parent s were Isaac Howe and Betsey Buck. Caroline L. Ensworth 1 Jun 1845, in Lansing, Tompkins, New York. She was the daughter of Hiram and Betsey (nee: Lewis) Ensworth, born in Independence, New York. Caroline was born 16 Aug. 1826 and passed away 6 Feb, 1854. After she passed away he married Luthea Bishop 16 Sept. 1855, in Independence, Allegany, New York. She was the daughter of George W. and Susanna (nee: Southworth) Bishop. Luthea was born 12 May 1828; and passed away 29 July 1918. Pvt Rufus Herrick Howe passed away 16 Apr 1905, in Bingham Center, Potter County, Pennsylvania and is buried in the North Bingham Cemetery, in North Bingham, Potter County, Pennsylvania.[1][2][3][4]
"He (Rufus) went with his father to Bingharn, Pa., when
but a boy, and became a farmer, carpenter and a merchant,
having a farm in Bingham Township, and built many buildings
in that-vicinity and elsewhere, and became a merchant in
Bingham Centre. He served in the Civil war in Co. E, 99th
regiment, Pa. Vols., was in the front at Petersburg, witnessed
Gen. Lee's surrender, and was discharged 8 July 1865, and
died in Bingham, 16 April 1905."[5]
