Dr. Estes Howe M.D. served with the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the French and Indian War.

Dr. Estes Howe was a Surgeon in Col. David Brewer's 20th Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment in 1775 and later in Col. Rufus Putnam's 5th Massachusetts Regiment, Continental Army. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]


Estes Howe was born at Rutland, Massachusetts Bay, June 24, 1747, a son of Samuel and Hannah (Smith) Howe. [7] [8]

  1. 18 Feb. 1773, Susanna Dwight, daughter of Nathaniel and Hannah (Lyman) Dwight, born 20 Oct. 1746; died in Belchertown, Mass., 6 Sept. 1785.
  2. 23 May 1797, Mrs. Diana (Hinsdale) Dwight, widow of Col. Elijah Dwight, and daughter of Samuel Hinsdale of Greenfield, Mass.

Daniel Wait Howe, in his extensive 1929 genealogy of the Howe family, offers this summary of Estes Howe's life:

"He went with his father from Rutland to Belchertown when but a boy, and was the first physician who settled in that town, and practiced there for more than fifty years. In the French and Indian war he was a drummer boy in his father's company at Lake George in 1759. During the Revolutionary war he served as surgeon in Col. Brewer's regiment ( April-Dec. 1775) and also in Col. Rufus Putnam's regiment (Jan. 1, 1777-May 1, 1779), and was on the staff of Gen. Gates. He died 3 March 1826, and his widow died 25 Jan. 1833. His will was dated 10 Oct. 1820."[9]

He died on March 3, 1826 in Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
