In 1781 he succeeded his uncle Henry Frederick Howe as 4th Baron Chedworth.
John Howe, 4th Baron Chedworth, died unmarried in October 1804, shortly after executing a will that was then challenged by Lieut.-Col. Alexander Wright and his cousin, Col. Sackville Henry Frederick Gwynne. That will challenge failed and the huge Howe fortune passed out of the family.
The 4th Lord Chedworth "greatly enjoyed" his visits to Yarmouth where he met with other literary gentlemen including the Rev. William Leigh, D.D., who died at his lodging in Yarmouth in 1808.
