Biography

Enoch was born in 1792. Enoch is the child of Perley Howe and Sarah Dunning.[1]

The 1888 Gazetteer Of Orange County, Vt. 1762-1888, compiled and published by Hamilton Child (The Syracuse Journal Company, Printers and Binders. Syracuse, N. Y., 1888) said of Enoch (in pages 511-533):

Enoch HOWES, son of Perly and Sarah (DUNNING) HOWES, was born in this town May 19, 1792, has always resided here, and has never been absent from town two months at a time. He married Polly ABBOT, in 1823, and has had three children, viz.: Anna (Mrs. John ADAMS), who died in 1866; Abigail (Mrs. Lewis PIERCE), a resident of Chicago, Ill., and Aurora M. (Mrs. James BURNHAM), of this town. Mr. HOWES has been selectman, town agent, and auditor and representative five different times. He followed the trade of blacksmithing for sixty years, and now his faculties are active, and he can read common print without the aid of glasses.

Lemuel Abijah Abbott said of him that "Mr. Howe had a charming disposition, and was a very lovable character." According to Abbott, he represented the town of Williamstown five times in the Legislature, was a selectman 10 years and justice of the peace for 30 years. The town records show that he held public office as follows : Auditor, 1823-4, 1833, 1837, 1843-4, 1847-8, 1854; overseer of the poor, 1823, 1833; selectman, 1828, 1830, 1856, 1859, and six times of which there is no record; town superindent of schools committee, 1828; juror, 1828, 1832-3, 1838, 1843-4-5, 1848; highway surveyor, 1843, 1848, 1851, 1855-6-7; trustee of surplus money, 1845-6, 1852-3; town treasurer, 1846; Republican member House of Representatives, Vermont Legislature, 1833-4, 1840-1-2. [2]

He died in Williamstown, Vermont, on 2 December 1890, in his 99th year.[2]
