Biography

Flag of Somerset (adopted 2013)
John Howe Bt MP was born in Somerset, England.

Sir John Howe, 1st Baronet Howe, of Little Compton, Withington, County of Gloucester, and of Wishford, County of Wiltshire, High Sheriff of Gloucestershire. [1]

He was the eldest son of Sir John Howe of Huntspill, Somerset, and Joan Grobham, sister and heir of Sir Richard Grobham, Knight, of Wishford and Little Compton.

Date of birth

John was born after 15 April 1585. The Visitation of England and Wales notes he was born before 1 September 1594. As the eldest son, he was born before the birth of his brother George Howe in 1589.

Inheritance

By the gift of his said uncle, Sir Richard Grobham, he had the manor of Compton in Withington, County of Gloucester, with Wishford and other estates in Wiltshire, upon his uncle's death in 1629. He was named as Executor to his uncle, Sir Richard Grobham on 15 July 1629.

Bridgwater Manor, Somerset

'In 1626 it was granted to Sir William and Sir George Whitmore, who had both been lessees of the estate. In 1627 George conveyed the manor, but not the castle, to Sir Richard Grobham, husband of his sister Margaret. Grobham died in 1629 leaving his widow in possession with remainder to his nephew George Grobham of Broomfield. George died probably in 1646, and in 1652 John Howe the elder, husband of Sir Richard's sister and heir Jane, together with a Richard Grobham, were apparently in possession of the estate. The manor continued in the Howe family, probably with little land, descending from John and Jane Howe to their son John (cr Bt 1660), to Sir John's son Sir Richard Grobham Howe (d by 1703), and to Sir Richard's son and namesake (d 1730), owner in 1704-5. No further reference to the manor has been found.'[1]

Member of Parliament

In 1650 he was appointed High Sheriff of Gloucestershire.

In 1654 he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Gloucestershire (until 1656). [2]

1st Baronet Howe

On 22 September 1660 he was created Baronet Howe, of Little Compton, Withington, County of Gloucester.

Marriage and family

On 23 Jul 1620 he married Bridget Rich, daughter of Thomas Rich and Anne Bourchier, the daughter of Thomas Bourchier, with issue six sons and three daughters. Their sons were Sir Richard Grobham Howe, 2nd Baronet, John Grobham Howe, Thomas Grobham Howe, William, George and Charles Howe. Their daughters were Susan, wife of John Ernle MP, Anna Howe and Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Chester, of Sainsbury.

Death

He was living on 13 October 1661 and died in 1671. [2] The Visitation of England and Wales notes he died before 4 May 1675.
