Census Records and other historical artifacts of Gertrude Angeline (Howe) Modeland: In the (6 Jul) 1870 Census, Gertrude Angeline was living in Oak Grove, Pierce, Wisconsin with her parents and her older sister, Prudence. They were living next to her maternal grandparents with her Uncle William Graham also nearby. She was just a month from age 2.[2] In the (6 Jun) 1880 Census, Truman's family was back in Hiawatha. She was living with her parents and five other siblings. She was 11 years old.[3] In the Nebraska State Census of (2 Jun) 1885, the family had moved to Sockville, Frontier, Nebraska by way of Gage County, Nebraska. Gertrude was then 16 and living with her parents. With the loss of her sister Jessie in Kansas, there were then only four of her siblings at home. There were also four boarders, all males and all with different surnames, living in the household.[4] In the (4 Jun) 1900 Census, Gertrude was living in Chicago's 11th Ward, Cook, Illinois with husband, William (John). They had been married for five years and, at that point, had no children.[5] In the (27 Apr) 1910 Census, the family was living in Oakland's 4th Ward, Alameda, California. Gertrude, age 42, was living with husband, William, daughter Gladys, age 7, and one of her twin "kid" brothers, Fred was at age 20.[6] In the (13 Jan - left margin) 1920 Census, Gertrude was still living in Oakland. The address recorded was 1387 10th St. She was 51 years of age (recorded as 50). Gladys was at age 16 and was also living in the household. William, however, was not in the home. Curiously, Gertrude's marital status was recorded as "widowed".[7] Clearly, William was alive until 26 Dec 1930; he is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland.[8] In the (17 Apr) 1930 Federal Census, Gertrude was still in Oakland, only now living in the home of her son-in-law, Norman Bevins along with her daughter, Gladys, who was at age 27, and her grandson, Norman Jr. at age 3. By then she was almost 62 years of age (recorded as age 60).[9] In the (8 Apr) 1940 Census, Gertrude was still living in the Bevins household in Oakland with her son-in-law, Norman, her daughter, Gladys and Norman Jr. then at age 13.[10] After her death in 1957, Gertrude Angeline was cremated and her ashes were scattered at an undisclosed location in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains.
