Vital Records of John Marshal Howe: John was born in Hiawatha, Brown, Kansas on 19 Sep 1872. He is the fourth born child and second son of Truman Howe and Gertrude Graham. He married Catherin Thompson, daughter of Andrew Gibson Thompson and Hannah P. Walker, b. in Huntingdon, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on 4 Mar 1888. They had seven children together, all born in Stockville, Frontier, Nebraska: 1). Truman Andrew b. 7 Dec 1911; 2). Naomi Thelma b. abt. 1913; 3). Leota b. 19 Aug 1914; 4). Loyal Thurman b. abt. 1917; 5). Nina b. 11 Nov 1918; d. same day; 6). John Royal b. 14 Mar 1922; 7). Doneta Marion b. 25 May 1928. John died in Stockville on 22 Dec 1963.[1]
Census, Land, and Court Records; and other Historical Artifacts of John Marshal Howe: John's paternal family moved around the Midwest often. John spent his first few years in Kansas, but was raised primarily in Nebraska. In the (6 Jun) 1880 Federal Census, John was living with his parents and siblings in Irving, Brown, Kansas. At that time, he was at age 7.[2] In the (2 Jun) 1885 Nebraska State Census, he was living in Stockville with four of his siblings. He was 12 at the time of the State Census.[3] His sister Jessie did not make the journey as she died in Hiawatha in abt. 1881. In the (2 Jan) 1920 Federal Census, John was still in Stockville with his wife, Catherine, who was age 32, and four of his children. Truman, was at age 8; Naomi was at 6; Leota was 5 and Loyal was 3. At that time, John was 47 years old.[4] In the 1930 Census, John is still in Stockville with all of his children. He is 57 years old.[5] John was a successful businessman and has a short biography in the Who's Who in Nebraska publication: "came from Kansas to Gage Co; 1884-1908 farmed, homesteaded near Stockville; 1908 owner gen merc & hdw store; 1898 with N H Darton, geologist, helped compile geology of comm; IOOF 173, past noble grand, past deputy grand master; hobbies, archeology & ancient history, has hunted Indian lore since 1884."[6] John died in Stockville and is buried in Arbor Cemetery with his wife, Catherin and three of their children.[7]
