Henry is said to have been born in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts on 6 May 1790. Noting that his parents were married in March of that year (supported by Massachusetts Vital Records), it suggests that there may have been "three-to-the-alter" or a recording error. He is the first born child and son of Stephen Howe and Judith Hunt.[1] Howe Genealogies shows that his birthplace was in Marlborough, MA. However, the Gazetteer of Essex and Caledonia Counties states that Henry's father (Stephen) "removed" to Lunenburg where he married Judith; contradicting the marriage record of Marlborough. The implication is that all ten children were born in Vermont. In this reference, Henry is mentioned only once as the son of Stephen Howe[2] Henry married Ann Chase in March of 1814.[3] He died in 1822 with his estate in the hands of the Probate Court.[4] Interesting factoid: The probate paper (third page of three) is signed by Stephen Howe, who happened to be clerk of the probate court. He is Henry's younger brother and is covered extensively in the Gazetteer, sourced below.
