Biography

This profile is part of the Howland Name Study.

Elizabeth Howland born before 1647[1] in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. However, no birth or baptism record was found for Elizabeth Howland in Marshfield.

Elizabeth Howland married John Low/Loe by 1665.[1][2]

Her husband, John Loe, died at "Pawtucket Falls" on March 26, 1676, during the Indian ambush of Captain Michael Peirse's company in King Philip's War.[3]

It is presumed that Elizabeth Loe was then considered a "singlewoman" who was convicted of [indiscretions] on 5 June 1678 accused Phillip Leonard of Marshfield in the act of indiscretion resulting in her pregnancy. Her punishment was "corporal", and Phillip Leonard was required to support the child at two shillings silver money until the age of seven.[4][1] It is presumed that her son Daniel Low was Phillip Leonard's alleged child.

Children of Elizabeth Howland and John Low/Loe:[1]

  1. Arthur Low, b. 1 November 1665.[1]
  2. Hannah Low, b. 15 July 1670.[1]
  3. Margaret Low, b. 17 March 16??[1]
  4. Job Low, b. before September 1677.[1]

Presumed child of Elizabeth (Howland) Low/Loe and Phillip Leonard:[1]

  1. [Speculative] Daniel Low, b. before June 1678.[1]

Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur Howland (brother of John who was on the Mayflower) and his wife Margaret. Proof of that can be found in Arthur's will, which states: ”Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Low the sum of ten pounds to be payed her by the heires executors administrators or assigns of my said wife Immediately after her decease.”

The proof that she was not the daughter of John Howland and Mary Lee can be found in the will of Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland wherein she refers to her granddaughter Elizabeth Bursley: ”Item I give unto my Grand Daughter Elizabeth Bursley one paire of sheets and one paire of Pillowbeeres.” Elizabeth Bursley was the eldest daughter of John Howland and Mary Lee and married John Bursley in December 1673.

Widow Elizabeth (Howland) Low died on 12 October 1678 in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. Her name is listed on a stone in the Old Winslow Burying Ground, Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts without a date.[5]

Her daughter Margaret could not have been born in 1691 since both she and her husband were already dead. Margaret's death record says she was about 100 years old when she died in December 1767 giving a birth year of about 1667. (Boston Deaths, 1700-1799, www.americanancestors.org)

If Elizabeth (Low-287) JOYCE was b:<1650 then Elizabeth (Howland-399) LOW b:<1640 could not be her mother.

According to TORREY, page 477: LOW, John (-1676) and [Elizabeth HOWLAND] dau. Arthur; b 1665?, b 1670; Marshfield [JMS- I believe that TORREY means before with use of b]

If John LOW and Elizabeth HOWLAND did marry about 1665, I believe that this would also preclude Elizabeth as mother of Elizabeth LOW.
