1686 • Birth and Parentage

Samuel Howland, son of Jabez and Bethia, born on May 24, 1686.[1]

1708 • First Marriage to Abigail Cary (1684 - 1737)

Samuel Howland firstly married Abigail Cary on May 6, 1708 in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay (now Bristol, Rhode Island).[2]

He firstly married on May 6, 1708, to Abigail Cary, who was born on August 31, 1684, daughter of John and Abigail (Allen) Cary; she died on August 16, 1737.

1738 • Second Marriage to Rachel Allen (1681 - 1745)

He secondly married to "Madame" Rachel Allen.[3]

Samuel secondly married Mrs. Rachel Allen. The book A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland and Their Descendants, of the United States and Canada: Together with an Account of the Efforts Made in England to Learn of Their English Ancestry, Etc. on page 333 states in the footnote: "The following inscription on a headstone in a burying-ground in the woods on the hill in Barrington, R. I., I think refers to a second wife of the above Samuel: "In the memory of Mrs. Rachel Howland ye wife of Samuel Howland, who departed this Life January ye 25th 1744-5 in about ye 64 of her age."

Her will, dated January 1744, refers to as the wife of "Samuel of Barrington, R. I.," and in it, she gives to "Samuel Allen the sword, gun &c., of my former Husband Samuel Allen, and one Silver tankard." This shows that she was a widow Allen."[4]

Franklyn Howland, in a footnote on page 333 of his work[4] notes, "The following inscription on a headstone in a burying-ground in the woods on the hill in Barrington, R. 1747 • Third Marriage to Dorthea (Ballard) Hunt (1685 - 1765)

Samuel Howland married third, Widow Dorthea Hunt on 4 June 1747 at Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay.[5]

1748 • Death

He died on May 15, 1748, in Bristol, Rhode Island.[3]

Samuel Howland was a lifelong resident of Bristol, prominent in its affairs, and the owner of considerable property. He died on May 15, 1748 in Bristol, Rhode Island.[3]

In the Name of God Amen.

I Samuel Howland of Bristol in the County of Bristol in the Colony of Rhode Island &c. Esqr. being weak in body yet of perfect mind memory & understanding for which I desire to own God's goodness knowing it is appointed for all men once to died do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.[6]

First I commend my soul to God as my reconciled Father thro. Jesus Christ and my body to the earth decently to be buried at the discretion of my Execr. herein after name hoping for a Bless'd Resurrection thro. the fire with unmerited grace and mercy of God in Christ Jesus my only Redeemer: And after my debts and funeral charges are paid the remainder of my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I dispose as of as followeth.

Impris I give to the poor of the Church of Christ in Bristol whereof I am an unworthy member. Three ounces of silver or so much paper currency as shall be equal in value thereto to be disposed of by Deacon John Throop Mr Samuel Smith and Joseph Wardwell or the survivors of them.

Item: I give to the Revd John Burt Pastor of sd Church two ounces of silver or so much paper currency as shall be equal in value thereto to buy him a ring.

Item: I give to the Revd Solomon Townsend of Warren two ounces of silver or so much paper currency as shall be equall thereto in value.

Item: I give to my sister in law Bathsheba Howland Wido. two ounces of silver or so much paper currency as shall be equal thereto in value.

Item: I give to my eldest son Samuel Howland five shillings money.

Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Dorothy the two hundred pounds (old Tenor) which she by agreement is to have the free disposition of. That is to say my will is that the same be duely paid to her by my Execr. and also all the moveable or household goods that were hers that came into my possession at the time of our inter marriage that she hath not or shall not dispose of before this Will takes place and are not worn out and useless. Provided she releases all her right of dower or power of thirds in or to my estate and not otherwise.

Item: I give to my sd wife thirty pounds (old Tenor) to put herself in mourning.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son John Howland my large desk & bookcase.

Item: I give and bequeath to my sd son John and to his heirs and assigns forever that lot of land in Bristol containing three fifths of an acre lying between Charles street and ye land of Timothy Fales Eqr. and also that lot containing about an acre and half which I lately bought of one Chase lying near ye school land called the burying ground.

Item: I give to my daughter in law Abigail Howland wife of my son Samuel the use and improvement of ye west part of my dwelling house vizt. one half ye cellar under sd west end and all ye lower room with ye closets and chimneys together with the chamber and garret over it and equall right in ye entres and stairway with those that own the other part of sd house with liberty of passing from the fore-door to the street and repassing, and liberty of passing between ye East part of my dwelling house and the Coopers shop to the well for water together with the upper or east end of my orchard extending from the land of Timothy Fales westerly till it comes within twelve feet of my barn and the stone wall at the head of my garden. And also liberty to improve ye land at the north of sd west end of my house from Hope Street within two feet of my north fire room as a garden of herbs &c (but not to set any building on) and also all ye land lying between sd west room[7] and Prison Lane. Refusing liberty to those that own the other part of the house of passing and repassing up a down ye great cellar stairs: All which premises and immunities I give to my sd daughter in law to be improvd by her or her assigns so long as she she remain either ye wife or wido. of my sd. Son Sam'l. and no longer: and upon her decease or marriage to any other person my will is that the same and every part thereof shall descend and go to her two daughters Abigail and Elizabeth the children of my sd. son Sam'l or the survivor of them in case of ye decease of either of them: And therefore I do give and bequeath unto my sd. two grand daughs. their heirs and assigns forever (after ye death or marriage of their mother as aforesd) all that part of the west end of my dwelling house together with the land profits privilege and appurtenances whatsoever given to my sd daughter in law as aforesd. during her naturall life or widowhood as aforesd. And in case both my sd grand children die before they arrive to the age of twenty one years without lawfull issue then the estate to them demised shall go to my son Sam'l if living and after his decease to go to his lawfull issue and for want thereof to go to other children their heirs and assigns forever.

Item: My will is that all the remaining part of my real estate whatsoever or wheresoever the same may be found shall be sold by my Execr. and a Deed or Deeds by him given for the same shall be good vallid and effectual (as tho. given by my self) to all intents and purposes and the effects thereof be disposed of in manner following together with my other personal estate not disposed of.

Item: I give to my grand daughter Abigail afore named my two silver spoons marked. S. ᴴ A.

Item: I give to my other grand daughter Eliza. before named my silver spoon markd R. A. to be kept by their mother till they are of age or married.

Item: I give to my two son Sam'l and John equally to be divided between them all my wearing apparrel made up into garments whether worn by self or not. together with my gold sleve buttons and best silver shoe buckles and knew buckles and my gun or guns sword and cane. Only my will is that in case my sd. son Sam'l shall not return from sea within nine months or shall die before his return then my sd son John shall have liberty to keep all the sd clothes and armory he paying half ye value thereof to my two grand daughters before named to be paid to their guardian for their use.

Item: I give to my beloved wife Dorothy my chaise with ye harness.

Item: I give to my sd. son John all my debts due to me by note and in forty shilling each note and also all that is due to me for recording Deeds.

Item: I give and bequeath all the rest of my personal estate together with the produce or effects of that part of my real estate (which I have ordered to be sold by my Execr. after named in this Will) in the following manner:

Vizt. One seventh part thereof to my sd. son John his heirs and assigns forever.

One seventh part thereof to my daughter Abigail Smith her heirs and assigns.

One seventh part thereof to my daughter Tabitha Peckham her heirs and assigns.

One seventh part thereof to daughter Phebe Wardwell her heirs and assigns.

One seventh part thereof to my daughter Mary Wardwell her heirs and assigns.

One other seventh part thereof to my daughter Mehetable Wardwell her heirs.

The other seventh part I give to my two grand children Abigail and Elizabeth before named their heirs and assigns forever: And of this my last Will and Testament I make and ordain my beloved son John Howland my sole Executor and I do ratify and confirm this & this only to be my last Will and Testament.

In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty ninth day of April in the twenty first year of present Majesties Reign Annoqe. Domini 1748.

At a Town Council held at Bristol in the County of Bristol on ye eleventh day of June A.D. 1748 Personally appeared Jonathan Peck and Thomas Green Eq's two of the witnesses to the foregoing will and made solemn oath that they saw the above named Samuel Howland Eq's sign seal publish and declare the foregoing to be his last Will and Testament and that he was of sound disposeing mind when he so did and that they together with Capt. Simon Davis signed as witnesses at the same time and in the presence of the Testator.

By virtue of the Power granted to the Town Council of ye Town of Bristol in ye County of Bristol in ye Colony of Rhode Island &c: for the probate of wills and granting forth Letters of Administration within ye sd. Town-Ship.

To all People to whom these Presents shall come greeting.

Be it known and manifest that on the eleventh day of June A.D. 1748. In Council was exhibited the last Will and Testament of Samuel Howland Late of Bristol Esqr. deceasd.: which was proved and approved of in Council according to law and John Howland of Bristol in the County of Bristol and Colony aforesd. the Executor named in sd. will appeared in Council and prayed that he might have administration granted him on sd. Samuel Howlands personall estate and he having given bond as the law directs, therefore administration is hereby granted to ye sd. John Howland fully authorizing and impowering him to act and do all things needfull and necessary in ye law, for his effectually performing the power of an Executor to ye sd. Samuel Howland personal estate and he to render an account of his trust to the Council as the law directs.

By order of Council I have given forth this Letter of Administration under my hand and Council Seal of Bristol this eleventh day of June in ye 22d. year of his Majesties Reign George ye Second King of Great Britain &c: Annoq. Dom. 1748.

I connected a Samuel Howland that appears to be the Samuel listed as a son. I listed it as uncertain because confirmation is required. If someone can find the confirmation or denial they can change the status accordingly.
Howland-1437 and Howland-657 appear to represent the same person because: both birth and death dates are same. Merge them to avoid duplicate profiles.
