Biography

This profile is part of the Howland Name Study.

No birth or baptism record was found for Martha Howland either in England or Plymouth Colony, but she was born about 1645 to Arthur Howland.[1] However, Martha is said to have been born about 1639,[2] on December 19, 1632, or December 29, 1638. The place is given as either Plymouth, Massachusetts,[2] or Windsor, Connecticut.

On January 15, 1659/60, Martha Howland married John Damon at Scituate as his second wife: "Martha and John Damen, Jan. 15, 1659.[3]

In her father, Arthur Howland's will, dated March 14, 1675, Martha is referred to as "my daughter Martha Damon."[4][5] He wrote, “Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Martha Damon, the sum of ten pounds to be payed her by the heires executors administrators or assigns of my said wife immediately after her decease.”

Widow Martha (Howland) Damon married secondly, as his second wife, Peter Bacon, son of George Bacon and his wife Margaret, at Hingham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay on February 19, 1679/80.[2] The marriage was recorded at Hingham as "Peter Bacon & Martha Dammin,"[6] (Hobart records the marriage of Peter Bacon, but he does not name Peter's wife.)[7]

Children of John and Martha (Howland) Damon:[2]:

  1. Experience Damon, b. 17 April 1662.[2][8]
  2. Silence Damon b. 2 January 1663/4.[2][8]
  3. Ebenezer Damon b. 11 January 1665/6.[2][8]

  6. Hannah Damon b. 2 December 1672.[2][8]
  7. Martha Damon was listed in her father's will.[2][9]

Child of Peter and Martha (Howland) (Damon) Bacon:[2]:

  1. Susanna Bacon b. Hingham 4 November 1682; d. 6 July 1718.[2]

Her husband, Peter Bacon died on 9 August 1694 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay.

Widow Martha (Howland) Bacon died at Hingham on December 19, 1732, at the age of 94.[2] Hingham Vital Records state death at Hingham in December 1732.[10]

Dammen-4 and Howland-301 appear to represent the same person because: My mistake - was confused about her LNAB. Should be Howland. Same spouse, same parents, same references. Sorry for the messup.

Woodworth-1325 and Howland-301 appear to represent the same person because: Reinitiated merge to eliminate bogus profile after syncing dates

Woodworth-1325 and Howland-301 do not represent the same person because: Birth and death dates are not near each other.

Woodworth-1325 and Howland-301 appear to represent the same person because: The profile of Woodworth-1325 has no credibility. The only relevant contention is that this individual was the second wife of John Damon hence she is a misnamed under-researched version of Holland-301 and these two profiles should be merged.

Please check your facts. There was no Joseph Woodworth on the Mayflower; Elizabeth Rogers was not married to a Woodworth; the second wife of John Damon was Martha Howland (not Martha Woodworth). The items annotated in this "Biography"did not come from Philbrick's "Mayflower."

I have been able to document Martha's marriages and death, but I can't find source for her birth. Does anyone have a source?
