Biography

Samuel Lewis Howton was born 12 Jan 1846 in Jonesboro, Jefferson County, Alabama [1][2][3]as shown on the Alabama 1907 census of Confederate Veterans. However, the birth date inscribed on his tombstone is 12 Jan 1848.[4] He was the son of Jim Howton and Peggy Gilmore. [2][5]

He married Rhoda Thompson on 25 Jun 1867 at the residence of Curtis Howton in Jefferson County, Alabama [6] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. Lou Candy Howton was born in Alabama about 1867 [7] and died 13 Aug 1945 in Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama. [8]
  2. Frances E. Howton was born 23 Dec 1869 in Alabama [7] and died 07 Feb 1939 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.[9]

  4. Archie Grace Howton was born in Alabama 23 December 1877 [3] and died 26 Apr 1945 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Alabama.[11] The estimated birth year "1869" on DC is incorrect; he was not listed on the 1870 Census.

Samuel died 28 Dec 1930 in Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama and was buried at Mud Creek Cemetery, Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama. [5] [4]
