Biography

John Hoyt immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Elizabeth Sherwood (7 Children); Simon Hoyt - prob d. w/o issue.

Origin

John was born about 1625, the fourth son of Great Migration emigrant Simon Hoyt, by Simon's first wife, (name unknown).[5] Simon married first by 1650, Unknown (Unknown). He married second, about 1659, Mary (Brundish) Purdy, widow of Francis Purdy.[5]

Perry Streeter says,[6] John Hoyt/Hoit, b. 3/12/1614 at York, England, d. 1684 at Rye, Westchester County, NY (then Fairfield County, CT.

Marriages and Children

Our evidence that John married the widow of Francis Purdy was that in 1678, her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Brown) Purdy, in 1678 requested that "my father John Hoit and my brother Thomas Browne might stand overseers, or my brother Hacaliah Browne,' but Francis Purdy died in 1658 [FOOF 1:495-96].)[5]

John married twice: first Unknown (Unknown), and second, Mary (Brundish) Purdy, widow of Francis Purdy. John left a will in which he mentioned his wife Mary, two daughters, and "two youngest sons," hinting that there may have been other children.

1) Married by 1650 to Unknown (Unknown).[5]

Children of John and Mary:

  1. Mary Hoyt b ca 1640's, prob mar Hachaliah Brown
  2. Rachel Hoyt b ca 1640's, mar John Horton [not Norton]

2) Married about 1659 to Mary (Brundage/Brundish) Purdy, widow of Francis Purdy.[5] Mary brought her five minor Purdy children: John Purdy, Francis Purdy, Joseph Purdy, Daniel Purdy, and Mary Purdy.[7]

Children of John and Mary (from John's will):[8]

  1. John Hoyt
  2. Simon Hoyt, b c. 1664, d 1680

Above are the only known children of John Hoyt. Some include the child below, without evidence (sources are user-contributed):

There may have been more children. (Please add appropriate sources for any additional children. Thanks!)

Fairfield, Connecticut

We find John Hoyt in town records of Fairfield from 1650 to 1683 when he sold 22 acres, including his dwelling house and barn to Peter Clapham. John had not lived in Fairfield for some years at this point.

According to Baird, John Hoyt (Hoitt) was born at Fairfield, removed to East Chester in 1665, then to Rye in 1676 where he was living as early as 1678 on Apawamis, "Budd's Neck," or Rye Neck, probably toward the southern end.[9]

East Chester, Westchester County, New York

John Hoyt was the third to sign the original Articles of Agreement between the inhabitants of Eastchester in 1665, and he was one of the original patentees in 1666.

Rye, New York

Just a few years before his death, John removed from Eastchester to Rye. In 1682, we find reference to his land in Eastchester as "formerly of John Hoyt." Baird reports that John was not one of the original proprietors of Rye; he probably purchased his land from one of the original settlers.[9]

Death and Legacy

John died before September 15, 1684 (inventory) at Rye, New York.[9]

This John Hoyt and John Hoyt-28 get continually interchanged. Frances Hoyt is the wife of the other John Hoyt and I am removing that connection. This John Hoyt only had two wives 1) Unknown and 2) Mary Elizabeth (Brundage) Purdy.

Have disconnected Frances Tuxbury-30 and Mary Jewell-681 from this profile. Two different John Hoyts (1501 and this one) were combined (I think) AKA a "bad merge"

Per Anderson's Great Migration Begins (p 1031), John Hoyt son of Simon Hoyt was b abt 1625; m1 ____ ____; m2 Mary (Brundish) Purdy. SO... it looks like we've got two different John Hoyts merged into one here.

John Hoyt 1 had two wives named Frances. The town records of Amesbury state that Sargent Jn Hoyt sen died on ye 28th day & was buried on ye 29 day of Feb An Dom 1687-88. The county records at Salem state that he died on the 29th of February. The second Frances survived him. The marriage to Mary Brundage would not be correct. The John that married Mary Brundage is supposedly son of Simon, but is most likely not the same John Hoyt.
