Note

He married (1) Sarah Collins and (2) a widow named Ruth Brown. He moved to Brentwood, NH as early as 1752- in that part incorporated as Poplin in 1764. He was taxed in Poplin in late 1772, but moved to Grafton, NH, being one of the earliest settlers of that place. Tradition says that the first apple trees set out in Grafton consisted of one hundred trees carried there from Poplin by the wife of Joseph Hoyt. Is is said that Joseph raised twenty men and went as Captain when the Indians burned Royalton, but he did not reach that place. He paid all the expenses himself, but, when his son Ebenezer was a member of the legislature, the money was refunded. An old arm chair, silver shoe-buckles and several other ancient relics, some of which were said to have been brought from England were preserved by his family. He was the father of 8 children (?? their names). He died at Grafton in 1808.

Research Note

The Hoyt genealogy says, without a citation to an original source, that Captain Joseph Hoyt died about 1808.[1] However, a record in the New Hampshire marriage records index gives the marriage date of Capt. Joseph Hoyt and the widow Ruth Brown as 6 Mar 1820.[2] The marriage record is not an original, but rather an undated transcription made by the town clerk of Danville, New Hampshire. Joseph Hoyt would have been 92 on the claimed marriage date and Ruth (Clough) Brown would have been 89. A marriage at such ages is not impossible, but it is unlikely. David W. Hoyt, the author of the Hoyt genealogy has a reputation as a careful researcher, so it is likely that the marriage record is in error. The marriage probably occurred within a few years of the death of Ruth's first husband, Enoch Brown, in 1796, and Joseph then probably died about 1808. (Bloom-1124 15:04, 3 June 2019 (UTC))
