The photograph above is of the Collingwood Church of 1870. The church Eli Hubbard was involved with was the same congregation, but I think that first services were held in his log home which may have been located on the corner of Sylvania and Peak Avenues. I found this information in 1975 among the records of Collingwood United Methodist Church in a copy of the dedication Calvin Van Wormer gave in 1915 for the new building. The sequence of church buildings is confusing; there seems to be an unphotographed 2nd building which was at Phillips and Detroit Avenues. Later the DeVilbiss Company used it for their executive dining room (Toledo Blade, 5 Dec 1987, pg 7). I have an image of this 1870 building from an archival collection of the University of Toledo. It clearly shows the Tremainsville Burying Grounds behind the building, so this would be the 3rd building. I was baptized and married in the 4th building.

Dear Barbara, I understand your frustration about researching rellatives from Sylvania. Waggoner has a 4 vol. set called "History of the City of Toledo and Lucas County" which has some Sylvania info. in it.

Out of my frustration I am currently putting together a bit of a research book on many of the Sylvania families and it includes the 1840 census and the 1850. I do have info. on the Hubbard families since they married into some of mine. >From my research: 1840 Census ELI HUBBARD, Males: 1 age 10-15, 2 age 15-20, 1 age 20-30, 1 age 50-60 Females: 1 under 5, 2 age 5-10, 1 age 15-20, 1 age 40-50 1850 Census Hiram Hubbard, age 32, male, Farmer, born OH Lettice, age 30, female, born NY Major S., age 14, male, born Mass. Sibley and Eli Hubbard-Sibley from Monroe County, New York, and Hubbard from Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Mr. Sibley first settled on half--Way Creek, in the North part of present Washington..."

"Eli Hubbard settled first on the East half of what is now Woodlawn Cemetery (the land not then in market) [Woodlawn Cemetery is located at Jackman Rd. and Central Ave. in Toledo.], on the line of the old Military Road, where he built his first cabin, and where his son Hiram was born. The latter, in his 70th year, is now living in Sylvania Township. Mr. Hubbard's first entry of land was that of the Northeast quarter of Section 23, and he settled on the North side of Ten-Mile Creek, now on Lagrange Street, where most of his large family were born. The Wilkinsons

arrived and settled in Tremainsville in October, 1823. There were living in the vicinity at that or an earlier date Major Coleman L Keeler, Eli Hubbard and Wil- liam Sebley, descendants of the Hubbards, and Keeler continued to live here, and Mr. Solomon Wil- kinson still lived there when, 94 years old. There are no doubt many names of earlier settlers which ought to be mentioned. It is not intended to do more than to preserve the names of a few of the early settlers. The Stickneys and Navarres are prob- ably entitled to the first place in that respect as set- tlers within the present city limits. Exerpt from "A Story of Early Toledo"

In 1823, Rev. John Baughman, a Methodist circuit rider, came upon Eli Hubbard, one of the earliest pioneers in this section of northwest Ohio. Rev. Baughman asked if there was someplace he could preach the gospel. Mr. Hubbard welcomed the reverend into his home. Five families met with Rev. Baughman at the Hubbard’s house: the Hubbards, the Hortons, the Whitneys, the Keelers, and the Wilkersons.

On November 29, 1833, The Methodist Episcopal Church of Port Lawrence built the first “Public House of Worship” of any denomination in what would become Toledo on ground donated by Eli Hubbard. Our church was known as Port Lawrence Township Meeting House, then Tremainsville Charge, Methodist Episcopal Church of Port Lawrence, then the West Toledo Church, followed by Collingwood Methodist Church, and in 1969 we became Collingwood United Methodist Church.

In true Methodist tradition, the Camp Meeting House on Ten Mile Creek spawned a Mission Station in Harris Corners (Jackman/Sylvania/Tremainsville). All of Toledo was growing, as was the church. In 1870 Samuel Blanchard and Benjamin Mallet “conveyed the deed to the Trustees and their successors” for the land that was part of Phillips Farm, in Collins' Woods, backing up to the Tremainsville burying ground. Our church presently stands on that property, which is why Collingwood Church is located on Phillips Avenue and not Collingwood Boulevard.

In 1911 the original 1870 structure was torn down and rebuilt. The 1911 building was extended and remodeled extensively in the 1950s. In 1962 the Educational Building was erected with 2 floors of classrooms, and offices and a custodian’s apartment in the basement. In 1969 the Sanctuary was given a complete renovation, giving us the beautiful stained glass windows that brighten our services today. The elevator and new entrance were completed in 1990 and in 2002 air conditioning was added to the Sanctuary. The Education building currently houses Summit Academy Secondary School for children with ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome.

As we celebrated our 185th anniversary in 2008, we knew we faced many challenges. With the average life-span of a church in America being 75 years, we know how fortunate we have been to serve the Toledo community for nearly two centuries. We pray that we can continue the faith journey Rev. Baughman and Eli Hubbard began that long ago day in the woods for many years to come. With God’s help we will.
