  • Obituary in Lancaster newspaper:
Mr. Louis Huber, an old resident of Lancaster, died at the home of his son, Mr. George Huber, in this village Thursday, May 21 at one o'clock p.m. at the age of 79 years, 11 mos and 21 days. He had been ailing more or less for the last five years, the cause of his death being dropsy. He was born in Bavaria, Germany, came to this country 61 years ago, and lived the greater portion of the time since in this town. His occupation most of the time was farming. He was a great change in this country. In his early days people here used to take their grist by their back and carry it to Windmill Point, Canada to get it ground. He leaves to mourn his death two sons and one daughter, George Huber, Louis Huber and Mrs. C. Adolf, all of this town; also twenty-three grand and three great grand children. The funeral took place last Saturday morning at St. Mary's Church, Rev. F. N. Sester officiating.
Death age on obituary puts his birth date at 31 May 1811
  • emigrated from Bavaria in 1829 at age 17 with parents, Ludwig and Louise? They traveled from NYC to Albany by boat and then from Albany to Lancaster by driving a team of newly purchased oxen.
Occupation: Farmer
Member of one of the first families of Lancaster NY, settling on a farm on Cemetery Rd. Blanketed indians would sleep in the long cattle barn or use the family bake oven, which was out in the yard, on their trip from the Tonawanda reservation to the Cattaraugus reservation with crude sleds drawn by horses in search of a winter food supply. When the Indians supplies of flour were low, Louis wife Maria supplemented them with generaous portions of cornmeal and rye flour and the leavened dough was kept in the kitchen over night and then backed in the morning.
Returning from their hunts in the southern part of the state, the Indians never failed to stop at the little farm and leave two or three fore-quarters of venison for the Louis Huber family. Game was plentiful then--deer and bear in the mountains of southern New York, but foxes, racoons, passenger pigeons and other small game abounded locally.
In his will, his children Louis, Franciska and George were named as his heirs. It also stated:
If my wife Mary Huber should survive me, I give, devise and bequeath until her all m;y personal and Real Estate for her use during her natural life. After her demise, it is my will and wish that Fifty Dollars be paid to the St. Mary's church for the reading of Masses for the repose of our Souls and I authorize any Executor here in after named to procure a burial lot and a suitable monument for meand my wife, not to esceed the amount of three hundred dollars. The remainder and residue I will devise and bequieath unto my children, George Huber, Louis Huber and Francis Adolf to be divided equally amonst them share and share alike to have and to hold to them and their heirs forever all the personal and Real Estate I may die possessed of. I hold a certain mortgage against my son George Huber and which I want him to pay only four percent interest instead of six percent from the making of said instrument. Likewise, I make, constitute and appoint my son, George Huber to be exector of my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills made by me. Signed with his mark (evidently he could not write) 12 November 1889.*
