Biography

WHAT RECORDED RECORDS TELL US ABOUT THOMAS HUCKABY-313.

There is a little misinformation in the Thomas Huckaby-313 Profile that needs to be reviewed. I feel some of them were caused by "Morgan Family History," HUCKABEE FAMILY (Huckaby) compiled for a Family Reunion in June 1989. In the Morgan Family History, the researcher speculates the first generation as John or Thomas Huckaby. The second-generation she assumes Thomas Huckaby, born in England and died 1736 Brunswick County, Virginia. Richard Huckaby, son of Thomas Huckaby, was the third generation, and Thomas Huckaby, son of Richard Huckaby as the fourth generation. Unfortunately, all the names and dates in the first four-generation do not support the Thomas Huckaby-313 profile.

The first recorded records I found for Thomas Huckaby-313 were on the 1746 "Tithe list for the Southan Parish" By Alexander Trent. Southan Parish was in Goochland County, Virginia. So this can not be Thomas Huccoby /Huckaby-983 that came over with William Byrd and died after 1695 in Charles City County or the Thomas Huckaby-630 that died before 6 June 1736 Brunswick County, Virginia.

I do not believe you need to be twenty-one to appear on a Tithe Record; You need to own property or something of value. Most people I found on Tithe Records were also on Court and Tax Records. Therefore, I believe Thomas Huckaby-313 was twenty-one years of age or older. If he were just twenty-one, he would have been born in 1724/1725. Therefore, I would estimate his birth as before 1720.

Thomas Huckaby-313 was married To Nancy Caroline Chaffin, the daughter of John and Mary Chaffin. John Chaffin is said to have died in 1773 in Cumberland County, Virginia. In john Chaffin's will, he named his children but did not mention his daughter, Nancy Caroline Chaffin Huckaby, married to Thomas Huckaby-313. John Chaffin left his grandson, Thomas Huckaby Jr. "for love and affections" 130 acres where Thomas Huckaby Sr-.313 once lived in Cumberland County, Virginia. John Chaffin' wrote his will in 1767. Both of Thomas Huckaby Jr, parents, must have died before 1767. If Thomas Huckaby-313 owned the land he was living on when he died, Thomas Huckaby Jr. would be an orphan. If Nancy were still living and Thomas Huckaby Jr. being the oldest son, the land would go to him. If Nancy, his mother, died first and then his father, Thomas Huckaby-313, Thomas Huckaby Jr would still be entitled to the land. It looks like John Chaffin maybe was leaving Thomas Huckaby Jr. something that was already his. Thomas Huckaby-313 and Nancy may not have owned the land and were living on John Chaffin's land that he gave Thomas Huckabt Jr. A review of "Wilman - Huckaby," by Bettina Pearson Higdon, I found a note that said: Deed in Cumberland County, Virginia, shows Thomas Huckaby lived on father-in-law's (John Chaffin) land before 1767 when Chaffin deeded the land to grandson Joshua Huckaby ( Joshua must be a misprint). There may be a recorded record to support the facts, but I have not found it. That is my take on the issue.

I found the second recorded record for Thomas Huckaby-313 in the Cumberland County Virginia Court Order Book 1749 - 1756. It was not a complete sentence; all it said was, "Ordered that Thomas Huckaby..... Now, what do these two recorded records tell us about Thomas Huckaby-313? First, there is no middle name, and the "F" should be removed. The "F" is in someone's family history and no recorded records. Second, Thomas Huckaby-313 was living in Cumberland County, Virginia, when he died, we think before 1767. Being born before 1720 seam to be a good birth and may have been born in Henrico County, Virginia. Goochland County was made from Henrico County in 1727. Cumberland County was created from Goochland County, Virginia 1748/9. Goochland County, Virginia, was not established until 1727. I would say Thomas Huckaby-313 was born in Henrico County, Virginia.

Will the profile manager or someone working the Huckaby/Chaffin line review the recorded records presented and if it supports Huckaby-313 make any changes needed. I will not make any changes.

Research

Thomas Huckaby was born about 1720 in England (possibly Surrey), married Miss Chaffin, who died before her father, John Chaffin, made out his will; therefore, all his children's names were mentioned in the will except Thomas' wife. 1. David Huckaby
2. Mrs. Newell C. Huckaby
3. J. Conley
4. Land Deed Cumberland County, Virginia 1767
5. Donna Hull
The information about Thomas Huckaby's parents was provided to me from Bill Huckaby, June, 1995: He stated "the information I have on Thomas' parents came from a book by Donna Hull (now Egberto) entitled AND THEN THERE WERE THREE THOUSAND. This book was written in about 1975-76 primarily about the Akers Family which came to California in the 1850's. Several Huckaby's married into the family when Joseph's nephews, David, Thomas and Nathan and neice Elizabeth (children of Joseph's brother Nathan) and their mother came to California in the late 1850's and early 1860's. Much of the Huckaby family not specifically married into the Akers are listed in Appendix C of this book."
Another researcher, Joyce Huckaby (now desceased), was adamant that the connection of Joseph's father, Thomas to the earlier Thomas and Kesiah Nukolls was not "proven". At this time, I have nothing to disprove it and Donna Egberto is adament that it is so. Bill Huckaby has some of her documents and in his opinion he stated it is probable but not clearly proven.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Thomas F. Huckaby is not the son of Richard Huckaby. Thomas Huckaby-832 is the son of Richard Huckaby. These two Thomas Huckaby should not be merged for they are not the same person. The Thomas Huckaby that married Nancy Caroline Chaffin, father is unknown at this time. I will add recorded records data later.

It is impossible that Richard Huckaby had a son at the age of about 11 years. Is it possible that this Thomas is a duplicate profile of the other Thomas? If so the need to be merged. The other Thomas may have had two wives.

This profile is almost 100% certainly connected to the wrong family. The other Thomas has records proving his lineage. The profile for Thomas, father of Richard, it explains: THOMAS HUCKABY THAT CAME WITH CAPTAIN WILLIAM BYRD TO HENRICO CO., NORTH SIDE OF THE JAMES RIVER ON 15 MARCH 1675/6 IS THE THOMAS HUCKABY THAT DIED BEFORE 05 AUGUST 1735 IN BRUNSWICK CO., VA.

LIFE EXPECTANCY IN 1700s VIRGINIA WAS 47.

WHEN HE CAME INTO VA IN 1675/6, HE WAS 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER BORN BETWEEN 1650-1655, MARRIED BY 1678

IN 1715 HE WOULD BE 60 PLUS YEARS OLD. DO NOT THINK PRINCE GEORGE CO. WOULD ALLOW SOMEONE 60 PLUS TO BE GUARDIAN OF AN ORPHAN. etc...

Hope ot helps. -Ken
