Biography

Henry Huddleston (or Hodelston) of Sawston (Salston) was the son of Edmund Huddleston of Sawston [1] and Dorothy Beconsall, daughter and heir of Henry Beconsall, esq. of Beaconsall in Lancashire. [2]

He was a Catholic and had been involved in the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. He accumulated large debts, and forfeited estates in other parts of the country, but was able to retain the Sawston manors.[1]

He married Dorothy Dormer, daughter of Robert Dormer 1st Lord Dormer by his wife the Honorable Elizabeth Brown daughter of Sir Anthony Brown, Viscount Montague.[2]

They had 4 sons and 2 daughters :

  1. Sir Robert, his heir [1][2]
  2. John, d.s.p. [2]
  3. Henry, heir to his brother [1][2]
  4. Edmund [2]
  5. Mary [2]
  6. Elizabeth [2]

He died at Sawston in 1657, in the same year as his older son Robert, and was succeeded by his younger son Henry.[1][2] [3]

Research Notes

Burke's Landed Gentry is not a reliable source for pre-1700 profiles (see Wikitree notes on Burke's Landed Gentry, and is known to include errors in its account of this family after the later 17th century.[1] Burke's date of death for Henry (1617) is in error.
