Biography

John was born about 1440. John Huddleston ... He passed away about 1512.

The main publications covering the pedigree of the Huddleston family of Millom, Cumberland diverge above and in this generation. John Huddleston, likely born about 1450, did exist and was a Member of Parliament but whether he had a son John who married a Fitz-Hugh or whether this man married both Stapleton and Fitz-Hugh (or whether anybody really married a Fitz-Hugh apparently) is a matter of some dispute. At least all those versions come back together one (or two) generations below this where a John Huddleston had 3 wives (Clifford, Seymour and Prickley).

There are (at least) 4 different versions of this lineage as shown in the Huddleston Free Space Page on WikiTree. Hopefully more sources and analysis will come to light along with original documents such as IPMs.

Version 1 & 2: Parents were Richard H. & Margaret Harrington

Amongst the main published pedigrees available on the internet, one group (Nicolson,[1] Burke[2] and Hutchinson[3]) does not acknowledge that Richard & Margaret Harrington had a son John who married Mary Fenwick; they skip straight to a son John who married Joan Stapleton. They do show a John at least two generations earlier marrying an un-named daughter of Henry Fenwick, as does the 1615 Visitation of Cumberland.[4] Therefore according to this group (Version 1), the parents of this profile are Richard Huddleston and Margaret Harrington, NOT John Huddleston and Mary Fenwick.

Version 3 Parents were John H. & Mary Fenwick

"History of Parliament" by Wedgwood[5] credits this generation and this profile seems to mainly be sourced from this book.

Version 4: parents were Richard H. and Joan Unknown

The renowned Huddleston researcher Annette Hudleston Harwood (citing Burke's Landed Gentry Vol 11 (1969) and work done by cousin Christophe Roy Huddleston FSA, see "See Also" below) credits this generation but gives different parents. She also names Harrington "Katherine" instead of Margaret and Wedgwood does not state any name at all for John's mother.

Marriage & Children

According to Wedgwood's "History of Parliament", this John was born about 1450 and married "Jane" Stapleton, widow of Christopher Harcourt who died in or after 1477; she was the daughter and co-heir of Sir Miles Stapleton of Ingham, Norfolk.[5] The only child shown by this source was a son & heir John; A.H.H. notes that his will also mentioned a daughter Alice (nothing more known of her). A record is also found of Miles Harcourt in 1500 releasing his interest in property of "West Dean" to John Huddleston, second husband of his mother Jane/Joane.[6] for information about Miles Harcourt releasing his claim on West Dean to John Huddleston, his mother's second husband. Burke and the Visitation of Cumberland show children of this couple as:

  1. Richard who married Margaret the "natural" aka "base" daughter of Richard Neville, had daughters Johan and Margaret; his son Richard married Margaret Dacre and died without issue, reverting inheritance of Millom back to his uncle John below
  2. John who continued the Millom line
  3. William who married Isabel Neville

Conflicted Children

And here lies a problem: while Burke and the Visitation of Cumberland give these sons to the John who married Jane/Joane Stapleton, the History of Parliament by Wedgwood gives these exact sons to his supposed father, the John who married Mary Fenwyck. On WikiTree at this time, Richard is linked as the brother of this profile (following Wedgwood) and John & William are linked as sons of this profile (following Burke and the Visitation of Cumberland).

Civil Records

Most of the events below come from "History of Parliament"[5]

  • 21 FEB 1486 Received a general pardon.
  • Event: 1489 Knighted, described as "Dubbed with Sir Thomas Stafford" who was described as "Dubbed by the Kinge at the sea-syde when he sent his army into Brytaigne". Arms listed as Gules, fretty Argent, a crescent Or for difference (presumably differenced from his father's arms who was still alive).[7]
  • Residence: 1492 Governor of Sudley Castle, Gloucestershire, England.
  • Event: 23 DEC 1492 Made an Esquire of the Royal Body.
  • Occupation: Usher of the King's Chamber.
  • Occupation: Sheriff of Gloucestershire. 1482 & 1499
  • Occupation: Baliff of Sudley Castle. 8 MAR 1484-1512
  • Occupation: Constable of Sudley Castle. 13 MAR 1478-1512
  • Occupation: Knight of the Shire for Gloucestershire. 1500
  • Occupation: Constable of Gloucester Castle. 14 FEB 1505
  • Occupation: High Sheriff of Cumberland 1 DEC 1505

Death & Estate

John wrote his will 5 Nov 1511 and it was probated 30 Jun 1512; he died 1 Jan 1512 likely at Hailes Abbey in Gloucestershire per Wedgwood. Again note that Visitation of Cumberland says this death date belongs to the son of this profile i.e. John who married a Fitz-Hugh; A.H.H. sayd that they were one and the same man. This profile noted an Inquisition Post Mortem on 16 Mar 1514 at Torpenhow, Cumberland and another at Winchombe, Gloucestershire on 16 Mar 1514 but did not state a source and they are not shown by Wedgwood.

as part of the huddleston cleanup (see frespace page which is still a work in progress https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Huddleston_of_Millom%2C_Cumberland%2C_England&public=1 ) the huddlestone-2 into huddleston-1800 merge should go ahead. They both represent the member of parliament who married Joane/Jane Stapleton. There are duplicate Stapleton profiles right now which need to be aligned and cleaned up, I suspect one of them is the wrong person entirely based on parents and age but I'm still working on it. Profile managers, thanks for your patience and support.

I rejected the merge of Huddleston-1800 and Huddleston-1915. 1915 is the son of 1800 i.e. the son of the John Huddleston who married Jane/Joan Stapleton. Huddleston-1800 IS a duplicate of Huddlestone-2 but the family name was never recorded with a trailing "e", so Huddlestone will be merged into Huddleston.

Huddleston-1915 and Huddleston-1800 are not ready to be merged because: How do we know this is the same person?

Huddleston-1801 and Huddlestone-2 are not ready to be merged because: Huddleston-1801 appears to have a son John Huddleston-1800 who is the same person as Huddlestone-2, this proposal appears to want to merge father and son into one profile. Please sort out your profiles

I don't understand your refusal message about a father and son. They both are married to the same woman. Many pre1500 have wrong date estimates.

None of the profiles involved in the merge have a father/son relationship.

Huddleston-1801 has a son Huddleston-1800

and then

Huddleston-1089 has a son Huddlestone-2 who has a son Huddleston-1915.

Do you have any other information about Huddleston-942? I was comparing for a possible match to Huddleston-137 but there is not nearly enough to go off of...
