Research Notes

His currently linked father Huddleston-1800 is a duplicate and will be the recipient of a merge from Huddlestone-2 which has the better bio and sourcing but the name was never recorded as "Huddlestone" so will be fixed by that merge.

This would appear to be the John Huddleston of three wives. There is uncertainty as to whether his father married BOTH Joane/Jane Stapleton and a Fitz-Hugh (possibly another Joan), or whether there were two distinct generations of "John Huddleston" who married those women.

See Huddleston Free Space Page on WikiTree for an exhaustive analysis of the main published Huddleston lineages and what is actually on WikiTree.

1. "Clay's Extinct Northern Peerages" asserts his first wife Jane Clifford as daughter of Henry Clifford XIV. [1]

Nicolson [2] and Burke [3] and the 1615 Visitation of Cumberland [4] all agree with this, Nicolson naming Henry as 5th Earl of Cumberland and Knight of the Garter; all say there was no issue from this marriage. Marlyn Lewis cites the earlier Henry Clifford/ Anne St. John as her parents; however this is on the notoriously unreliable and usually poorly sourced "Our Royal, Titled and Noble Ancestors" website (see "See Also"). From an age perspective, neither one is ideal or preferred. However, there is no issue from this marriage, so perhaps we don't have to worry too much.

2. Joan Seymour seems on the old side to be the mother of John's two 'main' children Anthony and Andrew, unless she was somehow the first wife and not the second????? As usual, birth dates in this era require some guesses and assumptions. The above cited sources from Nicolson and Burke list her as John's second wife and mother of Anthony and Andrew. Nicolson says Joan was "sister of Sir John Seymour, knight, father of the lady Jane Seymour, wife to king Henry the eighth".

3. Joyce Richley / Prickley, daughter of John, of Prickley, Worcestershire. This marriage appears in the "1569 Visitation of Worcestershire" [5] Her mother was Joyce, daughter and heir of William Aubrery. Nicolson and Burke's "Commoners" also list her, but do not report any issue. Foster feels she is the mother of Andrew. Note that she also appears in the "Visitation of Cumberland"[4] Per the "Visitation of Worcestershire" this couple had Andrew who married Mary, daughter of Cuthbert Hutton (described below) and Anne who married Sir Hugh Askogh, Knight. However, Maddison in "Lincolnshire Pedigrees"[6] records Hugh "Ayscough"s wife as Bridget Hudleston "by his 3rd wife Joyce...Prickley" so these two county documents differ as to whether it was Ann or Bridget Huddleston who married Sir Hugh. Also there is some difference of opinion as to the mother of Andrew Huddleston; Jane Seymour or Joyce Prickley. The Visitation of Worcestershire was published first and seems closer to a primary document as it was based on actual visits by heralds as opposed to Maddison's 1902 aggregated document. If that logic is accepted, then one would say that the daughter who married Hugh Askogh/Ayscough was "Anne" instead of "Bridget" but Jefferson[7] says that Anne married Ralph Latus and an un-named daughter married Sir Hugh, so possibly Bridget is correct. More research is needed.

Children

  1. Anthony Huddleston, b: 1519; d: 1598; m: 1541 Marie Barentyne
  2. Anne Huddleston, b: c1520; m: c1540 Ralph Latus [7]
  3. William Huddleston, bpt: 25 July 1549 Haseley; (he had at least 13 children, several of whom were illegitimate); d: c1628; m: Mary Bridges of Gloucestershire (d: 1601).
  4. Andrew Huddleston who according to Nicolson "married one of the co-heirs of Thomas Hutton of Hutton-John Esquire, and was ancestor of the present family at Hutton-John" [2] Per Burke [3] it was Mary Hutton, sister of Thomas and they had son Joseph "Hodleston" of Farringdon in Lancashire. Joseph married Eleanor, daughter of Cuthbert Sisson of Kirkbarrow in Westmoreland and left a son & heir Andrew Hudleston, from whom the Hudlestons of Hutton-John.
  5. Bridget Huddleston, m: Sir Hugh Askew=Askogh=Ayscough (see above).

As part of the Huddleston cleanup (I added a link to the freespace page I created in the bio), I support the merge into the lower number Huddleston-1799 which is just a shell. Thanks!

Huddleston-1898 and Huddleston-1799 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same father and both profiles mention son Anthony Huddleston with same dates (c1519-c1598)
